Looking idly at these (Passat/A4, mainly) - just want to know if the 4Motion system is the same as the Quattro system, or did VW get a cheaper version!

They're just marketing terms and don't refer to any specific system, there are different versions of both available

No its pretty simple really. If you are looking at 1995-2005ish vehicles they all use much the same 4th generation Quattro system. There are no cars in the range that will significantly out perform others in terms of4WD capability.
Quattro, Syncro, 4Motion are all names for much the same system.

Thats fine, they are great cars. Just be weary of the A4 if you are looking at prior to 2001. The Passat before that date is a much safer as the Audi is the last of an old body shell and it lacks in the NCAP safety tests. There is a very good value Passat Syncro 2.8 on here at the moment for about 5K if you have a look.
