Slotted rotors question

Wouldn't every time the pad goes by get damaged by the indents of the rotor!

I knew that's the answer but my head is like it might haha

it is intended to help prevent glazing of the pad surface.

I always understood that they allow the hot gases clamped under the pad to escape quicker for a better bite onto the rotor.

Correct, they are there to control gas build-up under the pads. I've only ever experienced gas build-up (no jokes about eating baked beans please!) under extreme racing conditions. Slotted rotors are of little practical use on a road car, although they do look good.
