i have been offered a vn commodore wagon. 3.8v6 auto 330,00kms, body straight but abit faded nice clean inside, rego and wof for 3months or so. only problem is the engine has a slight knock wen first started in the morning. maybe big end bearings. how much would you pay!

Scrap price, sounds like a POS. take into account even though it looks tidy you could fix the engine then drive it and find all the wheel bearings are shot and the steering rack pisses oil etc etc Takes up so much time

Depends on if you're thinking of doing it up & keeping it for a while. The engines are cheap enough to get & pretty straight forward to replace.

And, any car with a few miles on it will have stuff that is wearing out. If it moves, it'll wear. Doesn't matter what make or model.

What does it do when first started in the afternoon! It may be pregnant and just have a dose of morning sickness, wait 3 months and it will go away.

You need to be getting a better idea about what the rest of it is like and even whether its worth buying at all, before talking about prices.Given what it is and how old it is it seems doubtful that the engine would be the "only problem".It might be a good buy but then again it might not be, especially if you can't do repairs yourself AND got access to the right spares at reasonable prices.Without having a look maybe $1200 at the outside.

Your theory stacks up but my pick would be the Johnson Rods out of sequence. Do the reset process and all will be good.
