We use a 80 series cruiser 4.2dt and it doesnt even feel like its towing the 3x horse float. Remember how much weight you have in the float because if you need to stop in a hurry you want more weight in front of it. I laugh when i see lite weight 2wd cars towing big floats these ppl are idiots.

even a lamborghini of some sort would probably make an alright tow vehicle, heavy, loads of torque, 4wd. dont know how easy tow bars are to fit though!

prado will pull 2000kg on a trailer no worries, plenty of stop, heaps cheaper than landcruisers, smaller so it fits in carparks etc
bonus it runs in awd mode which provides a more sure footed feel when towing too
