I know its a broad question but interested to hear what people think would be the best base model to get into 4wding!

danni_2254, Jan 20, 12:46am
Under 5k *

Surf

Yea I had a look thru the boards and I thought that thread had died. Just saw it before

Under 5K - probably still a Suzuki Vitara. A broad answer.

richard198, Jan 20, 2:12am
Suzuki Vitara is good. Also Landrover and Landcruiser.

danni_2254, Jan 20, 2:13am
How about 4x4 utes!

vtecintegra, Jan 20, 2:24am
Tend to hold their value too well - you won't find much for your budget

danni_2254, Jan 20, 2:27am
Whats better, 1991 Ford Courier petrol or 1989 Toyota Hilux diesel!

richard198, Jan 20, 2:29am
You do realise you're going to have to spend the same again before the 4WD clubs will let you onto their courses!
A set of mud tyres alone will cost heaps!

danni_2254, Jan 20, 2:30am
Don't really give a crap about their clubs and courses, just need something to go out the bush with mates for a shoot

What ever is the cheapest with a good drive train
Can get good discounts for body damage & use the savings for the REAL 4x4 gear (winch's /air lockers etc etc)

A reasonably capable 4x4 only really needs a modest winch on front/ lsd diff on front / an air locker for the back diff / a reasonable body height & reasonable tread depth mud tyres
Brains are a must have. .

After that it's all about how BIG your balls are ;-)

mrfxit, Jan 20, 2:33am
In that case, you really are going to need a winch & learn how to use it(or a mate with a winch who owes you a few favors)

mrfxit, Jan 20, 2:36am
Would be a good option.
Full service & the "other gear" should do the trick ok.

danni_2254, Jan 20, 2:37am
Cheers, i'd be looking to spend another 2k or so on gear. Not too keen on digging it out

richard198, Jan 20, 2:41am
On road tyres!
Good luck!

It's a good place to start with for ideas & retail prices (comparing to s/h)
Going to the 4x4 club meets as a spectator WOULD be a great idea to get ideas on what to & what NOT to do for getting around & what gear holds up ok & what breaks fast.
Manukau 4x4 winch comps are a barrel of laughs & feature on the tv shows a lot.

mrfxit, Jan 20, 2:45am
Hence the winch, will soon learn to upgrade the tyres after all that winching.

Some chunky /blocky AT tyres would do for the easier dry stuff
Set up as a road/track 4x4 could put it upwads of 10K easy.
2K won't get you far if buying new or near new gear.
& won't get you anything much if getting the shop to do it.

danni_2254, Jan 20, 3:00am
Not looking to do vertical climbs or anything, just need something to get me into the aka's or tararua's. Are the surf 4x4's any good!

mrfxit, Jan 20, 3:08am
It's really easy to get stuck with road tyres & std "open" diff's, hence the suggestion of a modest winch.
What experience do you have with 4x4ing

a.woodrow, Jan 20, 3:11am
I've owned one with the sd23 motor - gutless is an understatement. Do yourself a favour and look for one with a td27.

curlcrown, Jan 20, 3:12am
it would come down to the condition of each vehicle with vehicles that old.

danni_2254, Jan 20, 3:35am
True

For under 5k, I would look for the best maintained you can find.
Not know where you are hunting, what tracks you use, if you have a misus that wants to sit in the same vehicle, kids, if need to put work tools in it. '
Also, is it a weekend toy, or are ya going to work, and what sort of distances.

Unless you want a club truck, or are going to narly sort of places, I would suggest, the best maintained truck, with no apparent issues, and budget for / do your self, a full service, cambelts (waterpumps tensioners, seals) if required, ALL filters and ALL oils - (diffs and trans), and a flush and pressure test of the radiator.
And if it has road tyres, budget from $820 for a new set (31") . That is another arguement AT's or muds.

As soon as you start using it offroad, you'll start finding any weakness in the vehicle.

In that price bracket, the you can buy alot more of a petrol truck, but they do cost a bit more to run - (Hurts at the pump but overall not that much dfference) That's another arguement also.

danni_2254, Jan 20, 3:43am
Do you need to get new rims for those tyres!
My criteria is as follows:
-Must be 4x4
-Must have 4+ seats
-Must be somewhat capable offroad or have a selection of aftermarket parts
-Would be a bonus if it can carry motorbikes on the back
-Would be a bonus if it doesn't crap out on me and cost $$$$ ;)
-Must NOT be a mitsi
