I am pretty sure they have a timing belt.
The version I checked was SOHC V-Tec

Hi Antwerp.I spoke to you a while ago about my 900 CB tail light problem. I got that sorted but I have another question.

The motor/gearbox (probably motor) is making a metallic rattle when I am slowing down in most gears. When the revs drop to about 2,500--2,000 it rattles but is fine on acceleration or even revving/throttling off in neutral is no problem.
It sounds like a loose timing chain or something similar! Do you have any suggestions on what it might be.is there something common to these motors !
Thanks

Mike

Bump !

antwerp87, Jul 9, 12:27am
Sorry for the absence on the MB. Have been planning my wedding. D17A has a cam belt. Needs replacing every 100k or 5 years. Whatever comes first. Mekongmike. It sounds like if its comming from engine could be a cam or tappet issue. Has the bike been serviced at all lately! Does it happen when its warm and cold or either!

mekongmike, Jul 9, 12:39am
It has had general servicing like filters, oils etc but nothing else that I am aware of. It doesn's seem to be any worse, warm or cold and is only when slowing down in gear.not idling or revving/slowing in nuetral.
It (seems) to rattle less if slowing down using brakes as well as shifting down the gears, but slowing down just using motor it rattles a fair bit between 3,000 and 2,000 RPM.
Do they have cam/timing chains ! That is my main concern.throwing one of those !
Fairly "light" rattling rather than something "heavy" like big end bearings and sounds like it is located nearer the top and front of the motor .
Good luck with the wedding plans. In August eh !

It does have a 2 stage timing chain. Generally doesnt need adjusting but it is an older bike. Probably best to take it in and get it cheked out. It sounds like it only happens when under load. Maybe a bit of piston slap. Would love to come take a look at it at some stage. Havent seen one in years.

mekongmike, Jul 9, 4:46am
You would be more than welcome to come and look when up in CHCH. Bike is in very good nick for its age. text me if you want.

Cheers. Next time i'm up there ill give ya a buzz
Sorry but for all MB purposes I must call you mekongmike as that is your TM name. Dont want to dis respect you in any way.

mekongmike, Jul 11, 2:46am
LOL.No disrespect considered. I spent some years living in and around the Mekong.so am actually kinda proud of the name !

antwerp87, Jul 13, 12:56am
Yea I enjoy spending time on the MB helping where I can. The 5cyl beasts run quite nicely when there operating properly and kept serviced well. There usually pretty easy to work on and most people can do the work themselves to keep service costs down.

antwerp87, Jul 13, 11:29am
Well for starters its not an East West motor. Its a North south motor. To get to it you need to remove the radiator fans. Then to get the crank pulley off you cant use a rattle gun. So you need a hex tool to hold the pulley in place. Its not fun when you dont have the tools. When you do have the tools its easy as!

Hi Antwerp
I hope you can help me. I have a 98 Accord SIR-T with a F20B in it. It's got a cold start issue. Sometimes it starts up first pop and sometimes it takes a while to get started, when it does start it runs really bad, the revs are very low and slowly creeps up to about 1200rpm. I found the problem, there is no vacuum when the engine is cranking causing the MAP sensor to stay at 5V so it's just over fueling while cranking. I checked the timing and it's all sweet but the belt is pretty loose and worn( I'm going to replace it this weekend). I also checked the V-Tec solenoid valve and its all working fine. Have you got any idea what can cause it not to have vacuum while cranking!

antwerp87, Jul 18, 11:23am
This may be something I need to take a look into. So no fault codes at all comming up while its happening! It may not necessarily show up now but if yu can check them then reset it by removing the radio fuse for 2 mins then puting it back in and see if it comes back

antwerp87, Jul 18, 11:24am
my first thought was PCV valve. have you checked that!

antwerp87, Jul 20, 11:39pm
Not a problem andy_563. Always happy to help

hi there, hoping to purchase a small stationwagon toyota carib style or nissan pulsar, can you recommend one to me, I want something economical, safe, reliable and relatively cheap to maintain, thanks is advance (approx 4gs to spend>

antwerp87, Jul 21, 5:14am
in the form of a honda. Your looking for either a honda orthia which is just about indistructable 2l twin camand can come in a 2wd or an awd (all wheel drive) or a honda accord american model which comes in a 2.2l vtec and there a good motor too. I had one for a while. Had nearly 400k on the clock when i sold it, had no oil leaks. The latter only comes in 2wd and only in auto but both are getting pretty cheap

leonie11, Jul 21, 6:34am
thanks for that will see if any on here for sale

Hi Antwerp, wifes Honda Fit (Jazz) CVT shudders on takeoff. I am told it's the start clutch. $3500 to repair. Is there any special oil or additive I could use or do I let it crap out then fix it , or fix it now! Cheers Grant.

antwerp87, Jul 26, 3:15pm
Take it into Honda, get them to put CVT fluid in it, its a bit more expensive than normal trans fluid and get them to programme the start clutch, the way to do this is by accelerating up to 60 then slowing down to 0 and do it again with the tablet hooked up. It will cost alot less than 3500.If that doesnt work I'm pretty sure Honda did a recall ones that were majorly faulty so you may get away with that if its the case.

Hi Antwerp.I have a 1992 Honda CRX Del Sol, 1500cc Vtec, Auto, Does this engine have valve clearances in case of Cambelt breakages! Can the Rack and Pinion be removed and replaced with motor in position! Thanks for your replies to all Honda owners. It's really helpful to us girls.

jezz43, Jul 30, 1:24am
hi antwerp, couple of questions for ya,

first being. car has a surge. starts up fine then after 30 seconds it surges from 1000 RPM to 2500 RPM. while driving under load it jerks. have been told something about a rotary control valve of some sort! is this correct!

secondly, transmission is non responsive for a few seconds then shoots off like a rocket. feels like its slipping but am unsure. its a CVT transmission.

car is a 1995 civic ferio EK3. 1500CC engine. transmission has MV4A printed on it next to a barcode. cheers

antwerp87, Jul 30, 11:38am
Yes the rack can be removed without removing the engine.
No the D15B doesntcause any problems its a non interferance motor. So you should be fine :D

antwerp87, Jul 30, 11:41am
As for the surging check your PCV valve. There pretty bad in Hondas. As for the CVT trans, If you have had a flat battery or had the battery disconnected the CVT control solenoid needs to be programmed, Honda can do it pretty easilly. Doesnt cost much. They just have to warm it up make sure there are no fault codes and do a specific road test to get it right.
Hope this helps :D

Hi Antwerp,
My 1999 Honda Orthia seems a bit reluctant to lock the torque converter.I drive across town, through 80km/hr zones and it does not lock.If I pull over, stop the engine then start it and drive off again it often seems to work.

A bit of reading indicates it may be the thermostat, what do you think! It seems to warm up easily enough but some people have reported success on the NZHondas forums after replacing it.

It's a facelift model with B20B engine
