my mazda has a shuddering when you brake what could this be

Quite a few things.
You need to be more specific, under what conditions do you notice the shudder!
Between X and Y speed!
While braking! etc

noticed it quite bad today when breaking going down a steep hill hubby said it was under heavy breaking.

It could possibly be a warped disk

I'm sure others will have suggestions too!

if it was a warped disk would this get picked up at a warrant.it has allways had a shudder on breaking.

Not if its caused by a warped disc rotor. If its caused by a worn ball joint or suspension bush then yes.

My car has warped rotors at the moment, I only notice it when I'm crawling to a stop, or going quite fast.If it was more noticeable going down a hill, maybe your rotors went out of shape as they got hotter

It is often the way. One stop or slowing, ok. 2 or more harder stops and the problem will show more and more unless a cooling off period was had. #1, try 3-4 hard stops from 80 or so, in quick succession, and see what happens. If it is noticeably worse, then it is likely warped rotors. MOST likely fronts, very unusual for rears to go.
