Ever heard of a Subaru B4 not being 4WD/AWD! I was told that B4 stood for "Bilstein Four Wheel Drive", but I have had an AA report done on one and it reports that it is Rear Wheel drive. Is this a mistake! Seems like a big mistake for a straightforward detail.

jasongroves, Feb 2, 5:47am
AA are idiots and a huge waste of money.fact.

morrisman1, Feb 2, 5:50am
haha, that proves how bloody dumb AA is.

franc123, Feb 2, 5:54am
LMAO does this really surprise anybody!Did they also tell you that the automatic choke isn't working properly, the points need resetting, the kingpins are worn out and its highly likely to suffer from "unexpected expense or repair" or whatever the term is that they use!You should have taken it to the nearest Subaru agent and asked for their top tech to look over it for an hour and not bothered with the AA.

jasongroves, Feb 2, 5:56am
Might need new apex seals and glow plugs too.

lookoutas, Feb 2, 6:05am
B4 stands for Boxer 4 Cylinder.

Funny - I just mentioned something about so called experts on the Panelbeater Woes thread.

Ha ha ha "thats gold!"

lookoutas, Feb 2, 6:22am
Good answer

hijacka, Feb 2, 6:23am
Unless of course its been converted to rwd and certified. my legacy is rwd and i know of many others that are because ive sold the gearboxs to them haha
And im pretty sure lookoutas is correct with b4 standing for boxer four.
Why the hell would the B on b4 engine stand for belstien when belstien is suspension and has noting to do with the engine. gtb is belstein or rsk is belstien for manual sedan me thinks

lookoutas, Feb 2, 6:36am
RSK is Rally Sport Kompressor/German for Turbo.

Hey - I might be wrong re the B4.
Do all the B4's have Bilstein!
Just what does it mean, without being a smartarse and give the answer as No!

hijacka, Feb 2, 6:42am
I yep true

Im not sure either but come to think about it they do make a h6 b4 so going on that b4 badge must not mean boxer four then. I don't no about all B4s having belstien shocks either just sort of speaking without thinking.Perhaps that is what it means thou!
Can anyone clarify! im to lazy to goggle it haha

namespace, Feb 2, 6:48am
Actually RSK means Renn Sports Kompressor, 'renn' being the German word for 'race'.RS is a famous badge used by many Subarus, Fords etc but one of the first cars to have it was the Porsche 911 RS - meaning Renn Sports, but yes the RS badge has been used on many rally cars.

Yes B4 means 'Boxer 4', GT-B means Grand Touring Bilsein.

Thanks for all these responses, but I am not sure what the answer to my question seems to be! Mixed haha, but interesting responses so far

hijacka, Feb 2, 6:52am
Hi namespace, Thats my original understanding of it too. But what is a sedan with belstien suspension called! as gt-b is wagon only.

hijacka, Feb 2, 6:58am
Subaru don't make rwd. The closest thing you'll get to factory rwd is running a dccd centre diff and adjusting the dial 80%rear output but its still doesn't make it a rwd car thou.

alexsmelex18, Feb 2, 7:04am
I'm rather confused - Could AA make such a mistake!

And does the presence of a power/A/T/Econ button near the gear stick indicate anything!

Hijacka, are you sure they don't make RWD!

So if B4 means 'Boxer 4 Cylinder' then my hope of it being a 4wd is probably in vain, particularly if a report says rwd after proper testing!

Very easily, it's the AA.

namespace, Feb 2, 7:05am
The '96-'98 sedans were called RS-B, as in Renn Sports Bilstein, then the newer shape came out in late '98 and Subaru changed the badging around on the sedans.Almost all B4 RSK's have Bilstein suspension except a few which we see as imports on 16" alloys.

jasongroves, Feb 2, 7:09am
Its 4WD. The AA don't do thorough inspections. Plus, they are idiots.

jasongroves, Feb 2, 7:10am
Yes.that its automatic.

lookoutas, Feb 2, 7:17am
No worries - digression is part'n'parcel on here.
Your car is AWD. If it did happen to be 2WD like some of the early models, it would be FWD, not RWD.

To be exact on another point - GT is Gran Turismo. But that's also interesting on that Renn terminology, I just followed along with the RS Escort being Rally Sport, and my 67 RS Camaro had the same meaning.

I still need to go back to this B4 debate. My Boxer 6 had a B4 badge in the grill. It got ripped out pretty bloody quick, but that makes me inquire back to the No answer with No explanation.
Spit it out.

lookoutas, Feb 2, 7:47am
Google sez: - The benefit of choosing an RSK (Rallye Sport Kompressor ??

hijacka, Feb 2, 7:49am
ok thanks that makes sense.
How about the B4 meaning thou. The H6 B4 has gone and confused it haha but looks like #1 got the answer he wanted

alexsmelex18, Feb 2, 7:52am
I did indeed. Thanks very much everyone!

namespace, Feb 2, 7:54am
I think that is a very common misunderstanding but Google could be right.Actually I don't think Subaru were 100% firm on what the badging meant.I would have liked to see the B4 RSK retain it's badging from the previous RS-B.A simple RS badge with a Bilstein badge below it would have looked very staunch, but I think Subaru decided to have a go at the Audi A4 with their B4 badging.
