noticed today when car is running that the ignition light on the dash stays on and flickers,can anyone advise!

Alternator fault, may be a problem with the internal electronics in it, unless of course the brushes inside that of course eventually wear out have just about had it.There was one brand of alternator fitted to AU's for a while that was problematic, it was a Mitsubishi one from memory. Get it to an auto sparky.

Yup, as above, alternator more than likely, the power steer pumps can seep oil and it goes straight on the alternator destroying the brushes, either rebuild or a new one.
