+1, bleed it running with the heater on. Sometimes doing this on an uphill slope can help.

Top marks getting it done, once the air bleeding is sorted you can bask in the satisfaction of doing it yourself!

Ok I need some more help.

Ive done everything in the front of the engine, waterpump thermostat etc etc.Filled it with water, bleed the system several times.BUT.!
I fill the expansion tank to the min mark, take the car for a 5 km drive. Water temp is 90 and doesn't change.Water is circulating as the heater works. But when I stop and sit to idle the water rises and then spits out of the expansion tank!
If I sit there with the car idling and the cap off for like 1/2 nothing happens.

The car doesnt boil or get overly hot or anything. It just seems (IMHO) to be sucking in air from somewhere as I keep on bleeding it and air comes out!

Oh and I have replaced the expansion tank cap

Hmmm that's a bit odd, can't say I have struck that with one. Normally I would suggest a quick look over by the local specialist/dealer and get them to bleed the air out of the system but given your location thats probably not an option as Wellington and the Rimutaka's are probably not a wise trip at the moment.

It does still sound to me like you have a LOT of air in the system somehow. Whats the situation with the heater! Is it blowing properly hot after the waterpump replacement and not just warm!

I hope you don't also have a head gasket issue as a result of the waterpump problem. Hopefully thats unlikely but keep checking for water in the oil, bubbles in the cooling system while running etc.

It might be worth a thread hollaring VAG Central for an opinion. I would also be looking at ways of positioning the car and undoing hoses in the hope of bleeding things better. I take it you have checked for hoses sucking flat while running etc!

The new expansion cap is definitely rated correctly etc and not a new but defective one!

I have had an old Fiat that was like that and it was just a matter of getting all the air out of the system. was not that easy to do.

Sorry thats about it for my thoughts for the moment.

Remember I only work on a limited number of these so opening it up to VAG Central and others might be a wise decision at this point. I think a visit to one of the great VW forums could be a good idea as well. A call to who supplied your parts might help things too.

Ive dropped it down to the local for a TK check tomorrow.Fingers crossed it isnt that. Its showing NO signs of a gasket at all though. No bubbles, no over heating, no condensation in the pipes, no rough starting and no excess pressure build up in the radiator hoses.

That sounds promising. Would be great to hear how you get on.
Best of luck with it!

Hang in there! It may be all sorted very easily. It was just unfortunate you managed to find one with the one big known issue being the plastic waterpump.

Not many left around still with those nowdays so you were pretty unlucky.

Head gasket is fine according to the TK test!

Ive just been down and taken a look at the expansion tank. Its covered in hair line cracks.Could this be a problem !

Super!
Sorry I didn't reply to your last updates, have been busy this week and didn't notice your thread up in the recents.

Very glad you got it sorted, chances are you will have a great run with a very nice car from here on in.
