Makes ours look great. Sure, their population is around 60 million but last 2009/2010 holiday toll from 1 December to Janaury 11 was 1582.

And 208 deaths per annum for each 100,000 vehicles on the road compared to 11 per 100,000 for us.

obviously you have some info but will ask
how many vehicles per population and how does that compare with NZ ( 4m people/ 2.1m vehicles)
what is the general state of their national roading, can you break it down more!

your link mentions speed as a factor in a lot of the crashes, SA has very long straight roads, very long boring roads, with not a lot of cops outside the city limitsspeed is always going to be a factor ,what is the ethnicity of the bulk of the vehicle owners and drivers, and the crashing drivers

I sold a car the other day to a South African just arrived here. He mentioned the comparison between road tolls. Population is 60 mil against 4.5 mill. He said a long weekend like Easter they could have around 450 deaths. Yes 450! Speed limit 70 in town and 120 open road but he said much better roads so speed not such an issue as one might think. Also stated that many deaths are pedestrians hit. Most are lower class people who have never driven and have no idea what being hit at 120km/hr will do to you. Apparantly they just wander along the road. Anyway, his comments made me google this morning and the results are interesting.

way I heard it, losing concentration ( going to sleep or tunnel vision) was a common cause of accidents
is there still an element of the 'roo shoot' ( australian slang for shooting abo's), there certainly used to be not so many years back , cars and trucks make excellent weapons

India has worlds worst road toll, with 130,000 deaths per year. (over 350 p/day).

You can only get so many on the roof of a bus or train before they start falling off and when it hits something there's the surety of mass carnage.
