Totally what I would get. If you can't quite stretch to the GTI in budget a GT flappy paddle or similar will still be fun for the purpose. but go GTI if you can stretch or find a bargain.

I'm assuming you are looking around the $20,000 mark! I'd forget the Merc, consider a 2003 Audi A4 1.8t, a 2004 Mini Cooper, a 2007 Honda Accord Euro or a low mileage Mazda 3.
