Ive got a 173 in my EH wagon, thinking about getting a new carb / manifold for her. IDEAS ! would a 450 4 barrel holley work! been told 350 2 barrel is not the best. Already have extractors, looking for a yella terra head also but not so easy to find anymore.

mrfxit, Jan 4, 3:50am
Sorry can't help on that much but .
If it needs a rebore, they go easily out to std 186ci
Have you got freeflows or extractors (do you know the difference!) just checking ;-)

Triple stromburgs or SU's would be better all round

4 barrel and six cylinders, not a good balance. Triple carbs off xu1, but once again getting rare.

bamz1, Jan 4, 4:05am
2 barrel holley

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 4:10am
Yip Ive got extractors. I have been looking at the tripple carb set up and the twin / side draft . Im a car painter not mechanic so want to make it as user friendly as possible.

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 4:13am
2 barrel holley. What size! would you use standard manifold with an adaptor plate!

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 4:36am
i wish JMMA be cheaper to put a v8 in her

jmma, Jan 4, 4:42am
He does say he may split, there is a cell number in the question, wouldn't hurt to ask (o:

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 4:55am
Cheers JMMA will give it ago but im guessin its going to be too expensive

gmphil, Jan 4, 4:57am
EH nice wagons not many those nw im guesn

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 5:01am
HAHA what a waste of an EH. some people should stick to escorts.

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 5:07am
no unfortunately they are a dying breed GMPHIL. I noticed you got a few parts 4 sale. You dont have a bonnet scoop for a VN ss do you!

mansonprincess, Jan 4, 5:11am
I love the look of the tripples but might be a bit to complicated for me.

I spent quite a bit of time modifying Red motors when I was reconditioning motors in Aussie in the late 70??

pico42, Jan 4, 5:32am
Apparently the WW stromberg carb from the 253 engine is well suited to the red 6, according to www.oldholden.com

I learnt way back that the best way to hot up a car was to slot in the latest model engine possible.
i.e, I had all the go-fast on my Mk1 Z engine, but when it chucked one out-of-bed, I saved up for a Mk3 motor & box. That made it a genuine ton-up + car.

When first put in it had a Webber. Then I brought triple Stombergs which looked cool, worked well at revs, but were terrible down low and diabolical for hill starts.
I finally conceded and replaced the Webber, which dropped 5/8 of FA off the top end, but as sr2 sez - drivability was much better.

Gotta agree with the webber (mk4 Cortina)
Not meaning to pick on the OP but a lot of ppl still get confused between basic headers/freeflows & extractors (tuned)

wernt starfire rods standard in blue/black motors

Personnal experience says either double or triple carb's.

The problem with using single carb' on even a slightly modified 173 / 202 is the inlet manifold. They all (even aftermarket ones) have a funny angle on them ie, the rear inlet is higher than the front & middle inlet which causes # 6 cylinder to run lean, and over time the piston will sh1t itself. The piston top breaks off at the top ring groove, you here a faint knocking and the only way you'll know what it is is when it (top of piston) finally disintergrates or you take head off to find the knock. You'll see # 6 looks ok but it may be in a funny position compared to the others, so you touch it and it slides back down the bore & you think WTF, why did that move lol.

So either get decent after market pistons or go with double / triple carb' set up.

Oddly enough 161 / 186 never had this problem. 173 / 202 are the weakest of the reds. If you can find one get a 179 OR better still find a red motor with HP cast on block where it normally has 161-173-179-202.

My 2 cents coming from 30 years of owning & playing with Holdens (103 of them LOL)

Some but not all blue motors, 99% sure but could be wrong.

gmphil, Jan 4, 7:45pm
Had many models over the years always liked eh same bout the red one in the link .
yup believe i do check my last listn email in il dig out

gmphil, Jan 4, 7:48pm
+1 on that info

brokebloke1, Jan 4, 9:11pm
years ago I had a 1958 FC holden with a 186 red 4speed in her
carb I used was a XE falcon weber, make a custom plate to mount to std single barrel Holden intake manifold, bolt carb on run a 12v wire from coil for coldstart and make cable accerelater and away you go.
This gave power, and was cheap to run

mansonprincess, Jan 5, 4:19am
thanks everyone for your comments - have had a few people over to have a look and have got some ideas, at the moment the two barrel holley looks like the go but im still open to ideas :)

ladatrouble, Jan 5, 4:36am
Twin carbs on a 3 port head gives the best cyl balance - smoother running and easy to set up with moderate power increase. Might be hard to find an X2 manifold these days though.
