mmm well i don't know why when i replaced the w/pump in my old '88 E34 M20B20 it was plastic.

I've just moved house this past weekend and found where i'd thrown the old one in a corner of the shed. Bugger i've chucked it now as i'd love to send it to you just to prove you wrong.

Yes i do know you are knowledgeable in Bimmers but i also know a little 'bout them.

cantycarvalet, Aug 2, 8:39pm
The one I just pulled out had a metal impeller, and the one I replaced it with had a metal one. I think it was the m50 that began to have plastic!

attitudedesignz, Aug 2, 8:46pm
Yep, M50 had plastic. But the one i plucked out of my M20 was also plastic. No matter what anyone says I KNOW WHAT PLASTIC IS lol.

BMW= Big Money Wasted!

doug207, Aug 3, 4:24am
What a helpful post rob_rooster, very succinct and thought out.

Interesting that you had a plastic impeller attitudedesignz, I've had two M20B25's and both were steel. Goes to show the lack of quality in some aftermarket junk.
My M50 had a steel blade, I expect it was replaced at some stage. The M52 my brother picked up had the original pump on it.yuck!

Get the mechanic to diagnose the problem Most 4cyl BMWs from the mid 90s will blow the headgasket if driven when overheated. They also crack heads from (cylinder 2) the exhaust valve seat to the water jacket. It is common for the black plastic water outlets on the back of the head to fail and leak too. Good luck.

Where is the OP with the diagnosis!

lizshaw25, Aug 3, 12:45pm
The engine died:-(Might not just be the engine so I decided not to repair it.Slightly annoyed but ya win some you lose some.I sold the car for parts and am buying a new car.

lizshaw25, Aug 3, 12:45pm
Stupid yes, but I was trying to get it to the garage.

han16, Aug 3, 2:03pm
Dairy of an idiot this was, you do know they will come tow a working car too!

stevens3, Aug 3, 9:03pm
Great another 885 head bites the dust.

Thanks Liz. We'll be shaw to vote for you.

Very subtle bob1120!

nathanmac, Aug 4, 12:28am
no that was his trademark sarcasm. what he meant to say was 'thank you for removing another over priced over rated POS off the road so I never have to see it in my garage'.

nathanmac, Aug 4, 12:46am
hahaha but how did you even find that!

now i feel sorry for the car - i bet it copped a fair serve from her as it graunched to stop.

nathanmac, Aug 4, 1:17am
Oh I'm not just having an easy dig at beemers. How many cars are there out there that are supposedly all flash and blingy which people break their financial necks getting into one thinking they've made the big step up the automotive ladder! Then they do the maths on the neglected maintenance once they've priced up the repair bill of the toasted motor or gearbox. a la NZ IDol above - win some lose some! What a great way to gamble your money away especially when you've already been told its a boat anchor!

Some people should only drive Corollas.

OP : There are many, MANY lessons you should take away from this entire experience, from what not to do when buying an old cheap car. to what not to do when a car shows signs its very sick. You have just wasted sooo much money/time/effort due to a complete lack of common sense.
I just hope you take these lessons on board for next time.

nathanmac, Aug 4, 4:03am
and the severely truncated thought process that went into the decision to buy one of those probably stopped at 'lots of seats and diesel is cheaper than petrol'. much the same as 'bmw's (etc) are exotic cars so they must be good'.

4th form science taught me the principle that you can't get something for nothing.cheap diesel when filling the tank doesn't necessarily offset the cost of rebuilding an underengineered motor after it's done 4 million kms without an oil change.just like a $1000 'exotic' car should send alarm bells ringing for even the most un-automotive car buyer.

stevens3, Aug 4, 4:04am
It was a 1k car after all. the seller pretty much did say it was a POS lol.

I'd say a simple repair would have sorted it if it had stopped being driven straight away.

lizshaw25, Aug 4, 8:13am
@Steven, yeah the car was close to dead when I bought it.I shouldn't have spent $1k.Whole experience has ended up costing me $3500 (by the time I buy a new car).Pretty much found a new car, and am have checked EVERYTHING.

At least I learnt on a car that was only $1k rather than $5k.

bigracket, Aug 4, 8:59am
Fair to say you crashed and burnt on that one Huh ! ( had to be said).

flat_white_ltd, Aug 4, 10:29am
awww, c'mon.leave her alone
.poor girl's only firing on 3 at best of times.

toysky, Aug 5, 2:24am
If it requires another engine , lets hope it doesn;t put in a Nissan engineand stick BMW badge on it! cost you so much less

Just remember that no matter what you are driving, if you lose your engine coolant you have A FEW SECONDSto get off the road and turn the engine off before total engine destruction will occur.

The laws of thermodynamics have no respect for what you paid for your car - $1,000 cars and $5,000 cars are no different than $70,000 cars if something springs a leak.

Stop IMMEDIATELY and investigate any warning light!
Stop IMMEDIATELY and investigate if you see steam or smoke!
Basically, if in doubt, STOP!

It might cost you, what,$100 to get your car picked up on a flatbed tow truck and carried to a garage! Less if you are a member of the AA. You wouldn't jog to hospital after a heart attack!
