without removing the petrol tank compleatley, any assistance greatly appreciated

Just a guess as I've never worked on one of these, but can you pop out the bottom half of the back seat and see if the pump is a tank mounted assembly that can be unbolted and pulled out! Quite a few jappas have integrated pump/float units that are installed on the top of the tank under the back seat. Good thing is it only takes a minute or two to whip out the seat and check, no bolts normally
