You interested in hearing about a real good priced quality 2k primer and clear coat system! If you havent already of course.

iman007, Jun 11, 9:08pm
nah, thats old news man!

rob_man, Jun 11, 9:46pm
Better/cheaper than Autothane!

attitudedesignz, Jun 11, 10:04pm
Always interested mate.

C'mon Rob', you want to know as well lol.

gunhand, Jun 11, 10:34pm
Ive been doin an old XE panelvan and the owner not wanting to spend alot I was put onto Challanger products through my rep. The primer is good as anything ive used and is very cost effective at trade price. And the Challanger clear kit is 5ltr plus 2,5 hardner and it is around $150 trade for the kit. Used on a AU the other day and was impressed. The primer performs well no sink back etc and seems to goes on nice and sands well. its $101 for a 4ltr plus hardner.
He is starting to sell more and more of it for obvious reasons. Good for day to day and most other stuff it seems. Also Ive been using Metalux CV 2kwhich is cost effective as well and performs very nicley.
What systems you use Attitude I cant remember.
You may well already know of this product LOL.

brad166, Jun 11, 10:49pm
isnt challenger just a primer surfacer though rather than a filler!
I have used it and found it hard to get coverage over compared to autothane, also n t quite as high build so you have to use more to be able to block it.

gunhand, Jun 11, 10:52pm
It says primer filler but dont they all. I actually found it covered well and even machine sanding I only cut through on very sharp edge as they all do anyway.
I havent used autothane so can not compare.

attitudedesignz, Jun 11, 11:07pm
PS, for a very good 2 pack filler, Fortec Parafill.

gunhand, Jun 11, 11:10pm
I havent used fortec so again I can not comment. Seem you are onto it tho as far as finding good product at a good price. We used PPG, then Spies then to metalux due to being very good and cost effective but I have heard the price is creeping up. But whats the others doing at the same time tho.
But yea look into challanger seems good for 2k products to me.

gunhand, Jun 11, 11:11pm
Who supplies/ distributes fortec product

attitudedesignz, Jun 11, 11:21pm
R J Patterson was the SI distributor for years, don't know about now tho', they bought it in from OZ themselves so they didn't have to deal with the BS that would happen at head office in Auckland. They really pumped Fortec down there and i beleive thay had something like a 30% share of paint side of refinish market.

gunhand, Jun 11, 11:22pm
Yep know of them for sure. there rep used to call in. Will check it out

gunhand, Jun 11, 11:25pm
Oh, I like the idea of a "great painter paint off"sounds like a challange lol.

brad166, Jun 11, 11:38pm
Cant beat you at a paint off if you are using fortec because fortec will fall off first every time.

And Protec has had a big shake up management wise in Auckland, the two main guys now are Duncan and Lyall. One of them left a GM position with a spies hecker suplier to run protec.

They are trying hard to shake off the Fortec stigma but will always be a budget brand due to as you mention they got brought out by PPG.

attitudedesignz, Jun 11, 11:50pm
Typical response, but i stand by my statement.

As for your other comments. Fortec has had MANY managers to "shake" things up and it has NEVER worked, maybe with PPG parenting it may get some headway.

It's Fortec in NZ as the name Protec was/is taken and couldn't/can't be used in NZ.

An example of how bad the managemet was, when product was bought into NZ it still had the Protec branding. So if we the distrbutors wanted to have the privilage of selling it we had to pay to have the branding changed to Fortec.
That shows the arrogance of the owners of Protec and Harvey Ferguson and how they viewed us (distributors) in NZ.

Just because the management was sh*t does not mean the product was/is.

attitudedesignz, Jun 11, 11:55pm
Yeah i was thinking of something along the lines of a "paint off".
A forum i'm on does a few of them, such as 'Attack of the killer".-
.rubbish bin, clock or any thing really.

Who's in!

gunhand, Jun 11, 11:57pm
me lol, who judges it!

brad166, Jun 11, 11:57pm
No it is now Protec in NZ as well. They now have the rights to leave it branded as protec instead of wasting money changing labels over.

Fortec/Protec is still always going to be a budget brand and I am not saying that is a bad thing. At the end of the day a good paint job comes down to prep and the person putting the paint on.

Have seen some shit jobs with good product and also some decent jobs done with shit product.

As for the paint off I am in. I will use PPG, what are you guys using!

attitudedesignz, Jun 12, 12:01am
In what capacity are you able to make that statement!

brad166, Jun 12, 12:03am

With PPG now owning the fortec/protec brand, do you see them putting it above their own products in the marketplace!

gunhand, Jun 12, 12:08am
With PPG being the owner of the brand, do you see them putting it above their own products in the marketplace![/quote]

The way PPG screws up painters minds with varients for varients for which you need a varient I think they should promote anything that actually may match. Have you seen PPG products on new cars! They can not even sort there formulas out for bumpers to match cars. apart from poor matching its a good product. If you go with there ideas you need to spend all your time matching paint and making colours references to every god dam car.

attitudedesignz, Jun 12, 12:11am
LMFAO, PPG is the only paint manufacturer i've ever seen with.-
.wait for it.-
.21 variants for the same colour.

attitudedesignz, Jun 12, 12:15am
I can see your point, but i don't think Fortec/Protec is the "budget" brand people think it is. The whole problem goes back to the things i aluded to earlier.

Mark, are you up for a 'paint off'! nothing big, just a bit of fun. I'm sure there will be a few on here that would be keen.
I'll write something up and start a thread for it.

gunhand, Jun 12, 12:18am
Why not.

rob_man, Jun 12, 12:34am
Funny how things go, Harvey was a personal friend for years but it's been a while since our paths have crossed. We used to run with the same crowd on the North Shore in the 70s. The company that owned the Protec name in NZ was two doors down from my panel shop and I remember the squabbles that went on between them and the Aussie brand. Fortec was always an OK brand of paints and I used a bit of it, the 2k primer/filler (golden beige sort of colour) and solid 2k colours I remember in particular.
