I think they refer to the model of Subaru they were used in and perhaps drive ratios. Also has some reference to whether the box was in a JDM vehicle, as different markets got different boxes to suit conditions.or something like that anyway.

Looks like auto trans part number to me, the new box(WC) is 4.1 final drive ratio so aslong as the old one is 4.1 ratio(refer to stick on the back of diff inspection plate) and the pinout on the plugs are the same you be sweet.
