What do you think of the Holden nev!

Yes, yes and YES.
They are VERY expensive to maintain and service. It's actually cheaper to run a Volkswagen Passat (or Golf) and service that than remortgage the house every time you need to replace cambelts etc etc ETC on a Subaru. I've found (by actual experience) that it costs around 20% LESS to maintain a European car, than it does to maintain a Subaru.
And, Subaru dealers are as crooked as hell, so do not expect a straight deal with your costs there, either.
Owning a Subaru is very similar to taking ALL the money out of your wallet (and bank account) and setting it on fire.

Those mechanics are RIGHT.

So maintenance and service. oil, filters, fluids, CV's, tyres, drive belts. I could go on but what on that list is more expensive than any other Jap 4WD car!I'll say that there are a fair few components to a cambelt service but its not something that is done every year is it!

I bought my Impreza brand new and have to disagree with everything you have said.

If you go up the mountain a lot you definitely want 4WD, but it doesn't particularly need to be a Subaru.
Re: 378190885.
The WRX imprezas are very fast cars, an ordinary 4WD Impreza like that is basically the same car but without the very fast engine and without the big mag wheels and high-performance tyres. (I don't know if they have smaller lighter gearboxes as well since they don't have to cope with turbo power!)
I wouldn't buy one, but that's because I would be looking for mechanical simplicity in a small cheap runabout car. I don't need 4WD in a 1500cc hatchback, and I don't see any need for a little 1500cc 4 cylinder engine to have 4 camshafts and 2 cylinder heads and a somewhat orphaned "boxer" engine design, it is all so much excess machinery under there waiting to go wrong, that a 1500cc hatchback just does not need to have.
Not that it should go wrong, correct maintenance will keep most things running for a long time, and even mechanically simple cars like Toyota Corollas are capable of serving up a $1000 trip to the garage every once in a while. But there are a *lot* more working parts under a 4WD car.
Turbo ones with bonnet scoops are supposedly more the ones that get stolen, but then, my workmate had his 1500cc non-turbo one stolen last year.
