Can someone tell me what the shortest time you can register your car for (ie is it 3 months or can you do 1 month!).

1 day if you want, just head into your local post shop and do it.

Ok thanks - just want to do it for 1 month - costs around $30 apparently.

Correct, just ask for a mr27. It gives you the option of choosing when you want it to expire: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/49/vehicle-licensing.html

you can register online as well . for future reference :)
