Cancelling registration

I gave away a car, which was then sold to a wrecker, around march this year.I did NOT cancel the registration, which was on hold till March.I got around to it today, and if I cancel the rego now, VTNZ want $100-odd in back rego fees.

What happens if I just ignore this, and do not cancel the rego!

100 will turn into 200 and so on and so on

crzyhrse, Nov 30, 12:54am
It deregisters after 12 months and NZTA demand the outstanding fees and if you don't pay it goes to a collection agency, Veda Advantage.

a.woodrow, Nov 30, 12:57am
Go back to the wreckers and get the plates. take them in and get vehicle deregistered. They used to wipe outstanding rego if you did this, not sure if it is still the case

shadowzz, Nov 30, 12:59am
Change of ownership $9. New owner puts on hold or cancels the rego. End of story

a.woodrow, Nov 30, 1:00am
Too late for that in this case

bitsy_boffin, Nov 30, 1:08am
Old owner still pays the backdate from March when it ran out of hold up to ownership change.

There is no getting around it #1, you have to pay up, longer you leave it, more it costs.

Thanks.Frustrating thing is that I gave the car to the daughter of a church friend of my wife, because she needed a car and had no money. It needed minor work for a wof and reg was on hold. However, within weeks, they sold it to a wrecker for a couple of hundy. And I'm faced with the bill.To be fair, the plate and blank form has sat by the door for a few months, so I really have no-one to blame but myself. But there ya go - try to help someone and it bites you in the ass!

Something not right, here.

OP, you say, in your post, the reg was on 'hold'.
When did you put it on 'hold'!
When did it come off 'hold' !

You should only have to pay for the period from when it returned to 'live', not the whole period from when you gave it away.

countrypete, Nov 30, 1:45am
Reg was on hold until July.Exemption then expired, and the outstanding fees from July to now is $107 ish.I've spoken to LTNZ and one operator suggested they may be able to waive it, put me through to her superior who doesn't want to know.I'm just annoyed that I tried to help someone out and it has turned around and bitten me. Hey, I could have sold it to a wrecker myself if I thought that's all it was worth!

ginga4lyfe, Nov 30, 1:48am
try again, call again and again untill you get what you deserve, the car was not being used on the road so why should you need to pay that money!

vtecintegra, Nov 30, 1:50am
I'd ask the friend to pay

elect70, Nov 30, 1:59am
I hadrustedescort I used for partstowed away by councilwho gave it to wreckerswho put it in the crusher . LTNZ wanted years rego, told themtake it up with Lower Hutt CCthey took it awayor the wrecker. After3 months of wrangling they finally dropped it & cancelled the reg .

crzyhrse, Nov 30, 2:00am
Lesson learned. No good deed goes unpunished.

franc123, Nov 30, 6:10am
Whoaah back the truck up!You gave the car to somebody because they desperately needed wheels! They can't have needed them that desperately if they junked the car within a matter of weeks, no change of ownership was initiated and they pocketed the proceeds from the scrapping!Either get the money off them for the licence fees owed or pay it yourself and put it down to experience.

luxy, Nov 30, 6:12am
pay the money, get on with life

neville48, Nov 30, 7:19am
if you cannot afford the bux at the moment just pay the 9 bux to change the ownership into someone elses name who will then cancel it immediatly then mv reg will chase you for the 107 bux but it will take them a while of too-ing and fro-ing before you get the letter from their hired muscle but sooner or later they will get their 107 bux of flesh.

intrade, Nov 30, 7:48am
you have to pay the 100$ as you where the registered owner learn your lesson and check online with number plate next time after you sold it or take plates off car when scrapping and derego info on how to go abouts now is )
ps if you ignore it then the bill will be for 1 fully year rego and baycorp will ring you with the demand

romulan7, Nov 30, 7:53am
Great idea!So if I asked you for $100 then sent you a bill for that $100 would you pay it!

Think about it for a while.

OP has a point the system with overdue licence and vehicles that have gone on hold and been scrapped needs sorting out.

neville48, Nov 30, 8:10am
Not really.People just have to be aware of their obligations and then be responsible for their obligations.its not rocket science.

countrypete, Nov 30, 8:34am
I'll pay it and put it down to experience, as it's my own fault for not doing it right at the time. Disappointing, but c'est la vie.

urbanrefugee54, Nov 30, 9:00am
take it as a $100 lesson in life & pay it. if the car was in someone elses name it wouldn't affect you - but it could at a later date hinder your credit rating or something else. if you cancel the rego it's a dead duck. if you don't - the plates 'might' surface somewhere & cost you more!

owene, Nov 30, 9:10am
Why didn't you put it into their name anyway! If they'd accrued speeding tickets, parking tickets etc you'd be up for them as well.

romulan7, Nov 30, 9:16am
It is interesting you say that! Many people are simply not aware of this basic fact that we know.Until someone told me I was not aware that an expired rego could be cancelled after 12 months and especially did not know that back duty would be expected to be paid.

Nothing surprises me though recently I purchased another car the owner had not sold a car in the last 15 years. He quite happily let me take the vehicle without checking the ownership had been changed and in respect was nievely trusting my honesty to do the paerwork change and not rack up the fines.

So yes to some people it can be rocket science.

skydog, Nov 30, 9:54am
