Doing 100km a day on open road - what car is best?

If your happy with your current car and getting 6.75 litres per 100km then I would hang onto it.By the time you spend more money in updating its going to throw any fuel savings out the window.Sure You might find a car that does 5 litres per 100 km but its going to take a long time to pay back the one or two litres of fuel you save after you take into account paying off your new car and deprieciation. Then build a little reserve for repairs and maintainance (Your going to need it on a newer car too ) and your away.Your current car wont deprieciate much more now compared to a newer car.
If you want a more comfortable car then I would suggest a 1996-97 Honda Accord 2200 cc (go for the Vtec for improved fuel economy)or even a Civic 1600 cc of the same years for similar money of what your Mazdas worth. At 100km/h the Accord will be revving at 2300 rpm, and getting around the 6 to 7 litres per 100km andthe Civic at about 2800 rpm.

Personally I would keep the car you have that is very good, by the time you buy a new car it would take a long time to make noticeable difference in savings after the extra purchase price of upgrading.

+100 Listen to this advice. No wonder people in this country are so financially illiterate. Spend $8k to save $15 at the pump - work that out!!

Bingo

As much as I agree with the 4 comments above people upgrade their car for more reasons than fuel economy. If I was doing 100km a day I would want something a bit more comfortable than a familia.

Depends on your lifestyle if you can afford to splash out, some like to save for trips and houses more than they do with cars for example. A car is a car to me.

just a thought. as has been mentioned earlier in this thread, many company reps use late model 6 cylinder cars. most of these companies also tend to sell off these cars at around 150k. they could be a viable purchase option as they are effectively run in, and usually well maintained, with most of the km's being "hot". in my opinion one of these cars would be a good buy

Nicely said picxie and well done for actually checking the figures, the ironic thing is so many people on here just open their mouths without engaging a calculator first. They say things that "sound good" without actually sitting down to do the math.

Thank you.

I think we are going to stick to our original plans, before petrol became an issue! Keep my car (which is not as much of a gas guzzler as I thought) and get a second car in 18months/2 years time when we need it (when we have kids we want whoever is left at home to have some transport in case of emergencies). I have taken a note of all the suggestions though so all your comments were not a waste of time! Of course things change, but it will be a start when we do start looking!

Best of luck with it all and congratulations on impending parenthood!
