Check the battery, might have enough grunt to turn the car over, but maybe not enough to turn it over fast enough and provide power for spark etc.

Any Auto sparky will be able to check this for you.

remove and clean earth connections between car and engine.

Faulty ballast resistor, white porcelain thing sit beside the coil.

jash3, May 10, 5:38am
Could be a fautly coil.

m16d, May 10, 5:50am
Yea. I'd go with zab. It'll have something to do with the ballast resistor.

+1
or faulty bypass system - they feed 12v direct to coil while cranking

Maybe it is a a early Mits with dist points, dirty and closed up gap.

ema1, May 10, 9:17am
I'd say more like burned points, they burn pretty quick if the ballast resister is naffed!
Been there lots of times in the past , i.e.25-30 years ago in my motor trade days fairly common thing with those.
Also check the distributor cap for cracks and other "gremlins" like burned contacts and worn centre contact.
Check the L.T. circuit for faults as well as checking the H.T. spark plug (carbon suppressor type)lead & coil wires for resistance, rule of thumb = a maximum allowable of 10K ohms resistance per 30cm of lead length-anything more than that resistance replace the leads.!
