I have a strange feeling that they are actually a ZF box in them from new, not quite sure but thought someone said thats what they are. Yes shoehorning a Allison might be ok.

I havn't kept up with what they are doing with the new ones but I would expect they are going to get the commercial version of the DSG if they have not already. Everything is getting the DSG from the biggest vans to the smallest vw hatches. The commercial DSG makes a lot of sense, no torque converter to get hot. You can't accidentally slip the clutch and burn it out. Loads of gears (so less load on the clutch when taking off and between changes) and the part that is taking the load is very simple and low maintenance.
