And under the current rules the driver of the right turning car has to also check that the vehicle that is going straight ahead is not going to overtake, that the left turning vehicle has seen you and is giving way to you, and that it wants to turn into the same road that you want to. (And not into the driveway just after the intersection).

Under the new rules the driver of the right turning vehicle only has to think - If there is a gap, go. If there is isn't, wait.

Unlike the current situation where both turning vehicles have to correctly guess the intentions of each over and the car going straight ahead for the rule as it is now to work smoothly.

yup, 'lets fall into line with the rest of the world'. jezzz I hate that! lets all sit & have lunch on the footpath right beside busy roads & diesel fumes, lets follow the Irish economic model (we all saw how they went), lets follow Swedens anti-smacking legislation, lets all try to speak like Americans because its on TV & got to be better, lets go to plastic UN-recyclable bottles instead of fully recycleable glass. What ever happened to Kiwis being unique, individuals, practical thinkers & innovative. nah, thats too hard, lets just 'fall in line with the rest of the world'

Umm. what! You mean the person pulling out using the rest of the median strip! Most times this is unavailable or is used as a right turn lane for the other direction to a street on the other side.
