does it have fluid in at correct level! what colour is the fluid! has it been leaking! has this problem been happening on and off before this! has anyone been doing burnouts in it! has it been towing heavy loads!

fiatracer, Mar 25, 12:51am
has the level got low, been filled, and now it doesn't work! [thinking trans fluid cavitation.]

has it been flushed and had filters replaced anytime recently!

rubes14, Mar 25, 1:10am
Yes have checked fluid, it is red, no leaks.Has happened once before then came right.Could be possibly be burnouts done by teenage son, doesnt have tow bar, cheers for you help.We havent changed fluid or filters recently.

Get yourself a tyre tread gauge for before/ after son driving the car tyre tread measurement.
Correctly identify the gearbox then look for commonproblems.
e.g ZF 4HP24

First. tell the son to get his own car to ruin!

Go to here
http://forums.jag-lovers.org/

Then to XJ40 section. To see all the posts and search you need to log in.Just create a user profile and you are away. The most common cause of this appears to be an electrical problem that is easily fixed if I remember correctly. There is a wealth of info on the site and if you do a search (once logged in) you are bound to find it.
