Big difference between and oil and filter change and a service.

Depends on if the car is a Falcon or a Daihatsu Mira. oil content alone there is 3L difference and that is in most workshops a $40 difference and then theres a difference between a basic service and an oil change. I would be bugeting for $220

Good advice. Over a number of years you will save serious dough, learn a lot and have satisfaction in knowing a job well done. The first time get a mate or someone with the skills to show you. It is not hard and with oil and filter specials always coming up regularly at retailers there are real savings possible.

Really! $50!
OK, let's see.a late model Mitsi Triton diesel. 8 litres of oil @ $10/litre and an oil filter @ $30.

Very easy to do yourself. Just get someone to show you or look it up on youtube. Theres bound to be a video of someone showing how to do servicing on your car. With the savings you make by doing it yourself, you can invest it in better quality oil. Just remember the other minor things when doing servicing on your car such as making sure you have axle stands or something similar under your car's chassis while your underneath it, make sure the car is on a flat surface/evenly jacked when undoing the bolt, having the car cool down is also important so you avoid scalding yourself with hot oil, and it makes getting the oil filter off by hand a lot easier etc.

Got quoted $50 to swap over some plugs and leads. a 5 min job requiring a 16mm socket on the end of a ratchet and extension

What kind of car though! If it's a Mitsi V3000 that requires manifold removal then $50 sounds fair.
And, some garages have a minimum charge out rate of say $50.

If it really is a 5 minute job, why didn't you do it yourself! Why piss around getting quotes!

Did you stop to think that maybe not everyone has tools or able to get hold of tools!
Nothing tricky about the change at all.I had just spent $200 there the day before on another issue too!
Ended up doing it myself for $14.95 !:>
