Gear Changing Problem

pcguitarist, Apr 14, 12:53am
Hey bit of an issue with a 97 Subaru Forester Ltd non-turbo, 200k's AUTO. When the car changes up from second to third gear it feels like it's holding in neutral/clutch pressed in (I don't know how auto's work) for a about 2 seconds. So basically I accelerate to second gear, then high revs for a couple of seconds and them jolts into third gear. Anyone have a clue on what this may be! Remedies! Causes! Preventatives!

id start with a trans oil check. check the level and how clean, or dirty it is.

you should probably do a service since ages on it. trans fluid most likely dextron should be nice red wine colour and is mesured with engine running unlike engine oil.

Yes always do a service, sounds to me like the auto trans is a bit tired. Not worth fixing just use it as is and hope for the best.

Could it be a simple Gearbox Swap to fix it!

Check oil level first idling in park, should be on the "F" mark. If all good there cheapest option maybe a service but shop around as there are some dodgy flush services out there. Ask them if the filter is changed.most don't.

There is a fault there somwhere, probably not clutchs but might be oil pump,,, but could also be clogged filter.

first problem its a subaru second thing sounds like the clutch pack or torque converter might be stuffed

Hey, thanks for the advice so far. Trans fluid is of a light red colour with no traces of metal filiings or anything. After driving the car for about 20mins, it stopped.Plus this morning (cold start) it didn't seem to do it either! Anyway.will see tonight when I drive home.
