Where to get a car key cut please?

Just purchased a 2004 Honda Fit and there is only one ignition key.It looks sort of complex just looking at it.

We definitely need one each (I'm not the one who is always misplacing mine lol) but unsure about where to get a proper one cut and how much it may cost.

Thanks a lot-sorry if this is an airheaded sort of query!

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 11, 4:37am
It's not the physical complexity of the key, it's whether it is encoded to the ECU.

A locksmith can scan it to see if it is encoded but my gut feeling on a car of this age and specification would be it isn't. So it's probably a simple copy.

some locksmiss. you have to check its probably got a chip , but you can get onecut without chip so you can unlock the door if you by accident lock the key in the car.

You may have to get a blank from the Honda dealership though even if it's not an encoded key.

A lot of locksmiths can do after market transponder keys now.

esther-anne, Apr 11, 5:56am
All answers appreciated-I guess we first have to discover whether we have a transponder key and take it from there.

So helpful on here-that's only my second question and I have had pleasant answers in spite of the reputation motoring has lol!

Esther-anne --You WILL be able to go to a decent locksmith and get a fit key cut even though it looks a bit odd

esther-anne, Apr 11, 6:36am
Hi kazbanz- thanks for that reassurance -by 'decent locksmith' I take it you are not referring to places like Mr. Minit, Mitre 10 or Placemakers!I have sussed out a couple of locksmiths in my area - I guess it's highly specialised work!Do you have any idea at all of what that might cost!

fordcrzy, Apr 11, 8:24am
did you get it from a dealer!
ask them for a second key

horsepower7, Apr 11, 8:26am
if you want a proper honda key ull have to order 1 thru honda, then get it coded to the car. locksmith can cut it for you

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 11, 8:28am
It only has that reputation because idiots come in here and offer no information but expect an answer to their problem and, rightly so, get torn a new one. They should head into 'Spirituality and New Age' - they pretend they have working crystal balls there.

I have had good service from Armstrong Locksmiths for car keys.

esther-anne, Apr 11, 9:42am
Hope I didn't do that tony - gave the information I could - except to now add 'yes' to fordcrzy who asked me, I got it from a dealer-thanks for the suggestion I ask him for another one. Did not think of that, made an assumption the one we got was the only one! Thanks to you too horsepower-life get's complicated don't it!

mugenb20b, Apr 11, 9:46am
So true!

esther-anne, Apr 11, 9:46am
Yep - I googled and thought they looked fine so will ring their 0800 number tomorrow,Thanks for recommendation!

horsepower7, Apr 11, 9:48am
sometimes you only get one key with the car, sometimes you get 3. i work at a car yard and we have a spare key draw, if its not in there, then that means only one key has come with the car, its just the luck of the draw. some keys are really expensive too.

fordcrzy, Apr 11, 9:55am
see we arent so bad over here in Motoring after all huh ester anne. :)

mopsy3, Apr 11, 7:04pm
Esther_anne I have had an encoded key cut by Mr Minit for my Territory for far less than half the price quoted to me by Ford. They have the same shaped key but without the Ford logo and a little computer that I think scanned the genuine key and programmed the new one to suit.

esther-anne, Apr 12, 12:24am
Hi mopsy3-thanks for that.Checked with our local Mr Minit today and he quoted $180 - he can certainly do it.Is this a reasonable price! We had no idea this sort of thing could be so expensive.

I must say you are delightfully helpful people in motoring contrary to the opinion of some other forums members.

any key cutting/hardware place! There are lots.

kazbanz, Apr 12, 5:54am
You are a bit far away or I'd suggest "my guy" for keycutting here in henderson. I would think anything around the $150 mark for a transponder key is about the right money.
Incidently --I've shipped cars to the islands with transponder keys.
because the local locksmith is unlikely to have the specialist gear to make transponder keys I get "normal" keys cut for the customers then duct tape the transponder key to the ignition barrel (inside the plastic cover) Then the car always thinks the key going in the ignition is the transponder key and if all the other keys get lost they can get more cut

esther-anne, Apr 12, 6:45am
You sound like a very smart and innovative individual kazbanz but yes-a little too far away, almost the end of the Whangaparoa Peninsula to consider coming to see your guy. Pity we're not still in Titirangi where we lived for years!
I have googled and found some good sounding locksmiths on the Hibiscus Coast so have emailed them to try and get a quote. Thanks for the suggestion that $150 could be fair and reasonable price to pay.

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 12, 6:47am
Wrong.

esther-anne, Apr 12, 7:40am
As you say tony that's not correct-Mitre 10 won't touch it for one!

spottie, Apr 12, 10:33am
Had one cut for my 2004 Jazz which is the same car as the Fit, cost $172 through Armstrongs. That was 2 months ago.
