Another one for the list should be the restricted ER6 Kawasaki. I think NZTA will allow these sort of bikes on a case by case basis as long as they comply with the power to weight ratio and they aren't a performance version

pebbles61, Jun 9, 7:46pm
I think the range of Triumph modern classics should be on the list, granted they're over 660cc, but they're pretty gutless _b

gunhand, Jun 9, 7:47pm
From what I understand this is the case as well. Some of the performance bikes are restricted to make them approved. And I think the U makes about 25kw.A full on GSXR600 is not a learner approved bike.

Ouch lol, that's harsh

pebbles61, Jun 9, 8:04pm
lol but true, ask my Bonnie =D but you know what they say, it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow.best bike I've owned I reckon.

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 9, 8:16pm
They had to have the 660cc limit because otherwise every hardly-ferguson would meet the power:weight criteria.

That's awesome, there are some decent ,bikes to choose from now. Have been on my learners bike for 20 years now, will be great to legally ride bigger bikes.

Especially some of the dual purpose bigger ones, they are way more fun than the 2 strokes anyway

stephenb1, Jun 11, 8:00pm
yea you carnt go wrong with the REAL triumphs not the japtrumpit. t140e thats me 20 years and never let me down thats why i still have it,

nzfatie, Jun 11, 10:16pm
Not all two strokes are banned.lots of vintage ones on the list like the Suzuki GT380, 500, 550, T500 and Yamaha RD350, 400.
Those bikes are powerful and don't handle well with their skinny tyres and poor brakes.probably more dangerous than an RGV250 for a learner!!

smac, Jun 11, 10:31pm
ooooo dangerous territory there - next you'll be saying that speed is not the reason for the road toll, that there's a component of driver skill (or lack thereof) involved or something equally ludicrous.

richardmayes, Jun 11, 11:01pm
Good - a first bike should be cheaper than a first car, not dearer!

richardmayes, Jun 11, 11:24pm
I should add - non-rider here, but a mate of mine learned to ride a few years ago, and he had a couple of observations:

(1) The moderately-powered 400cc bike he bought after he'd finished with his learner's license was a lot cheaper than the 250cc it replaced, and even more so when age and condition were taken into account.

(2) The 400 was a lot easier to ride in many ways than the 250.

richynuts, Jun 12, 12:53am
agree first time I rode a RD400 I nailed it and ended up sitting on the tailight with my feet dragging on the ground!

zoltec45, Jun 14, 3:29am
Hyosung left off the list! I thought they were getting more popular in NZ. Im looking at a few right now

fordcrzy, Jun 14, 3:39am
all 250's are approved unless they are on the banned list. the "approved" list is only for bikes over 250cc

xs1100, Jun 14, 3:49am
so what happens if you have had your bike learners license now for ahhhh i dont know lets just say 20 yrs give or take a month or 2 hahaha

xs1100, Jun 15, 4:45am
can i still get a new bike under the new laws and just carry on

smac, Jun 15, 2:18pm
Until they bring in a law to make you re-sit if you want to stay on L/R. I'm in the same situation, 15 years here.

mm12345, Jun 16, 12:51am
I just took a Cagiva Raptor 125cc (old 33hp model) for a ride.Jesus wept. These are sold in the UK, de-tuned to 12hp - lol - lucky poms.
TBH, as a rider for >35 years, I think these new laws are daft.

plasticboys, Jun 16, 1:10am
so a learner ride now can ride a harly . lmaodo they want people dead

desmodave, Jun 16, 2:35am
Didnt know there was such bike i thought you must have had iy mixed up with the Mito untill i had a search.Nice little bike.

richynuts, Jun 16, 3:02am
I don't think they are daft. just flawed, be a good opportunity to buy up a few LAMS bikes now and resell in the summer.mmmm

I'm very suprised to see the WR450F is on the approved list. Those things are rapid off road.. maybe less so onroad?
