From memory, the tail light is clipped in on the outer edge.

Once the out side screws are off. Grab the whole lens with both hands wrapped around the 90' degree angle where it goes inside the tailgate jamb, and give it a good wriggle. Up down , left and right.
Basically shake it out.
I'm pretty sure they're held in by lugs that are pushed into the body. They are strong so don't be scared to use a bit of vigorous elbow grease.

Should be 4 screws on the outside, from memory. Whats the model numbers on the tail lights!
The 4 screws hold EVERYTHING in, including the base unit. There won't be any screws on the inside. Somebody "may" have sealed the bases in to the frame

No, that's the older model. The '94 Surf has two screws on the inside edge and can only be accessed once the tail gate is down.

LOL oh ok, there must be some cross over models then because they are listed as being 89 up to the 96 models. Maybe theres some confusion going on between Hilux /Hiace & Surf models Well that has me screwed then because my Surf take 6 screws each.

The shape changed in 1989, ie. N130 chassis, went up to 1995, early 130 chassis Surfs had reverse lights mounted on either side of the number plate. The older shape Surf (with fibreglass rear cab) was made from 1984 to 1989. Those models had 6 screws in their tail lights.

Hadn't seen the 2 screw lenses on any Surfs before From 84 to late 88 they had 6 screws From 89 to 96 they had 4 screws
What reg as "Surf" models had 2 screws I don't know because most models sold here on TM state 84 to 88 (6 screw)or 89 to 96 (4 screw)
Maybe it's the early Prado that had 2 screws
