Too true, cam chain tensioner snapped, possibly bent valves. Hence replacement engine.

Apparently this is a common occurance with these miti's.I never knew or I would have had it checked just like a cam belt. So now when i see a car ad that says "cam chain so it never needs changing" I'll be saying yeah right! Is it bad that i hope your WOF goes terribly ha ha Jokes. good luck.

Have replaced a few timing chains at 280-300000km. they do wear out and anyone knowing what to look for would be aware of it when carring out services.I would suggest that it made a lot of noise prior to letting go and people who dont stop when unusual noises appear pay the price.

Well that makes sence & if i'd known (rather than being told "chain driven so never needs relacing by sales man) then i would have had it done for sure. & not complaining, nor am i a mechanic. I was told the noise I was hearing was the speedo cable needing a grease. What's happened, has happened, no use crying over it ha ha.& "service" these days just means a glorified oil & filter change doesnt it.

L400 4m40motor.isdifferent to pajero.L400has dipstick in front housing like challenger.and diff sump. Pajero has dip stick in block.a shit to change over.not worth the hassle. really.
