Toyota Ipsum - stereo controls on steering wheel

Hi there,
We took an Ipsum for a test drive today.Apparently it came into the car yard with no stereo so they fitted a NZ stereo. The volume controls etc on the steering wheel did not work.I was wondering if anyone knows if you put a different stereo to the factory model in if these can be wired in to work.Alot of dealers seem to be taking photos of this part of the car as a selling tool yet both Ipsums today didn't have factory stereos so they both didn't work. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure they are not gear selectors (UP and DOWN buttons)!

some ipsums have stereo controls but they control the stereo via the "AVC LAN" network communications system that the car uses. you cannot make the steering controls work any other stereo other than the factory one unless you are an experienced electronics engineer

You can buy JVC/Pioneer headunits that you can fit a adapter onto and you can use your steering wheel control. The downside is that the interface sometimes fails and it needs to be reset, and that means needing to take out the wiring. So can be expensive. Its not really worth it IMO.

Get a new one with a remote and glue it to your dashboard pointing at the stereo
