Grinding noise in motor/gearbox! please help!

fairtrade3, Jun 20, 8:46pm
Good morning, thought i'd come in and post my problem where ever possible. I have a mitsubishi mirage 89 and it has a grinding almost scratching noise the second the clutch becomes released when in neutral or in gear. The noise doesn't do it if clutch is not depressed and the gears ain't stuck or anything like that, just this awful noise. Would anyone know what the diagnose's could be! and could it be a pricey job! thank you

Ah was wondering could it be a throw out bearing! or any worn bearing for that matter!

andrea_w, Jun 20, 8:52pm
That would suggest a dying release bearing
If I'm right, it's not an expensive part. getting to the part is the hardest part but I'm not sure how hard it is to remove the gearbox on your specific car

2nd'd

Yep, thrust release bearing.

Gearboxes are a breeze to remove compared to most FWD cars.

PS = Check the clutch cable adjustment.sounds too late now and too tight.
On that model pull on the cable near the bulkhead outward and see if if comes out at all, if its the circlip model, when pulled it should be moved so you can see 2 clear "threads. If its got a rubber wheel nut it should be adjusted so that the rubber nipple sticks out just proud of the washer. (Approx 5mm for both if too hard to understand)

Hey thanks to all the bright minds here, i was blardy told the thing needed a whole damn new gearbox, i was kicking myself but then again judging from there faces they didnt know a god damn thing about what they where on about (no offence intended but certain Indian mechanics are horrible) .so yeah had to come here and find out exactly and yes that seems to be the problem, o for owesum lol. Ceebee2 awesome I'll try my best ;)

Fill it up with bannas and saw dust, it will be fine.

Ummm, I thought they were refering to mechanics of Indians. Bert raced one, but no real race reference.

So does it doitwhen you talk yourfoot off theclutch and goawaywhenyouputyour footon the clutch!.

fairtrade3, Jun 21, 5:31am
Yep it does, ended up taking my mitsi in to Mitsubishi dealers (manukau) to get that second opinion and yep got a couple of bearings that are worn but not to stress bout it, most mirage's do it sometime in there exsistence.the bearing simply has worn but will never stop the car from running.

well it sounds like gearbox bearings them. Ant guna be release bearing. Proberly main inputshaft bearing.

ghost-roaster, Jun 21, 6:12am
It's theinputbearing inthegearbox.Get it reco'ed or putinaS/Hbox.
And gosay sorry to the mechanic for calling him names.

If it was a release brg it would do it when pressure was applied. more likely to be the imput brg. The g,boximput shaft turns with the motor until you put the clutch in. (When the car is stationary) Im guessing the cheapest option is a second hand g,box and fresh oil. your mechanic will check the wear on the clutch and advise you if it needs to be done while the box is out. sorry Its an easy job for a mechanic to do.

Piece of cake to dismantle / replace the bearings.at least you will know they are brand new. Real common in those Mirages. The last one I did cost customer approx $600 all up. I sourced the bearings from Auckland Bearings as cheaper than Mitsi. I also set the pre-loads correctly which not many garages do these days including gearbox "specialist" shops I have dealt with.
