I would suggest some sort of head restraint or helmet perhaps, I have pulled out of 1000's of driveways in both econovans and mitsubishis ,and haven't managed to hit my head once !

$15K would get you into a common rail diesel powered VW Transporter, light years ahead of an equivalently priced Hiace.

I thought Hiaces' were reliable too until the head cracked one day then I find out it's a fairly common problem with the 3 litre turbo diesels.

It's only a problem if cooling systems are neglected. Get the radiator rodded out every few years and cooling system checked, and they won't crack.

handle terrible, terrible fuel consumption. shocking brake noise, panels are flimsy, seats uncomfortable, badly positioned stereo. burn oil leak oil, roofs leak water, wheel allignment issues. bad safety ratings, I could go on as well. I have one of these 2007 and so does my neighbour it appears i am not alone on these faults. biggest problematic pile of shit i have owned.

VW, Mercedes, Fiat etc any of the European common rail vans are just a million miles ahead of the Japanese options in your price range. Go and drive some, the difference in economy, power, servicing, comfort, reliability is huge.

BTW, I used a Multipla for our sparky/antenna installer and it was fantastic. It cost us a small fraction of what some of my friends were paying to run vans in their business.

If a Multipla is not to your taste any of the more mainstream vans above would be fine. Its hard to overestimate the difference between the Japanese and Euro vans or that price point, the Multipla for instance uses less than half the fuel of a Hiace (diesel and diesel) and at the same requires half the servicing and is more reliable, significantly more safe and will out power/comfort/handle the Hiace easily. To top it off it can be bought for a song!

This is pretty much the pattern accross the range. In your price range you are seeing two sides of a VERY large technology divide.

Just thought I should add. In the Multipla vs Commercial Euro Van for sparky use decision.

The Multipla is wide and short. It dosn't suit tool access from the side very well but you can lay out a nice wide rack system at the back which works well. Its the cheapest to buy and by far the best around town (I would rather throw one around town than any city car because the visibility is better with no blind spots and its just as zippy and maneuverable.

It was also eye catching and brilliant advertising.

BUT.

The shortness of the Multipla combined with a regular car type bonnet means its basically no good for a capping tube. Thats the big drawback. We just removed the front centre seat and put our ladder and capping inside down the middle. This worked but was not ideal.

So, if you are pondering the Multipla, thats the big thing to consider IMO having been there and done almost exactly what you are doing.
