so something strange electrical is happening with my 98 e39 540i bmw. when you slide the sun visor mirror accross on either side, the radio cuts out the steering wheel goes up and down and the air bag light comes on the dash (which now is stuck on) but radio working now. any thoughts on this would be appreciated, also noticed a strange burning like smell but has being like that for some time. thanks

When you slide the mirror cover across it should bring a makeup light on right!Sounds like the switch is faulty/worn out and has created a short circuit.
See if it still misbehaves with the visor unclipped.

It is possibly your ignition switch on the way out.
ignition swtiches are a common failure - and being a euro it'll cost as much as a small horse. Actually, i think I was quoted $70.

You wouldn't get a very big horse for $70.
