Landcruiser 80 Over charging

jsc1, Sep 11, 1:49am
Noticed my warning lights came on and the charging volt meter went up to 17 volts. Im told it might be the regulator on the alternator. Could it be anything else or is it more open wallet surgery !

Id check with a multi meter just to make sure but it will be a regulator issue. Alternator will need to come out and be stripped down.

Is that the dealership or the alternator!

jsc1, Sep 11, 2:50am
yea guy with a multimeter said it waent yo to 16 volt

Is 16v that excessive!Just asking.

jsc1, Sep 11, 3:04am
I was told 14 is the top limit

dent, Sep 11, 3:30am
Calcium Battery's often need up to 14.8v to be charged correctly. But 16v is defiantly on the high side and you will end up with over charging and boiling of the battery. Shortened battery life and other issues.

Would 28volts be to high on a 24v Nissan Safari!

gammelvind, Sep 11, 3:44am
28 volts equivalent to 14 volt on 12 volt system, so all good.

Ok my year old batteries have the red thing showing up on them, what checks can be done to see if it the batteries or the charging system thats playing up.

could be regulator could be a rotor fault as well. the alternators are cheaper to fix than nissan ones. also cheaper to rep;ace than nissan ones

intrade, Sep 11, 4:06am
for a calcium battery 16 volt is ok they need high voltage you should rev it and see if it goes even higher at higher rpm that would indicate regulator fault if it went higher and higher with more rpm

bigfatmat1, Sep 11, 4:15am
this is true but however his batt light is on and the set point for that regulator is 14.4 so clearly a fault

Ok cheers for the info, the batteries (SuperCharge golds) are not even half way through a 24month warranty, 28volts is the max it goes to, sits just above 24volts at idle. Is there any way to test a battery!
