Mitsi starting problems help please

fair_lane, Sep 12, 3:40am
Got a 1985 Mitsi Mirage 1300cc manual trans, starts perfectly every time when cold but has started to refuse to turn engine over when hot. I can hear the starter solenoid clicking but no turning, leave it for 15 minutes and it usually fires up straight away. Tried rocking car in gear in case the ring gear has worn in one spot but that doesn't work. Any bright ideas guys! TIA.

At 27 years old the starter motor is probably on its way out. Another thing to check are the battery and starter cable connections.

Next time it refuses to crank, get a mate to hold the key over to START while you tap the solenoid (yeah the bit that clicks) with a reasonable size rock, hammer handle etc, whatever you can lay your hands on.If it now cranks you need to get the starter off and repaired, could be brushes sticking and/or worn, or the solenoid itself could be crook. As mentioned a high resistance in a connection somewhere could be at fault, sometimes these might not give issues until a bit of heat gets involved, dirty battery terminals and poor earth connections at the engine block are common. But try the above test first.

If you do that you will definitely need a replacement starter as it is likely to burn thepossibly shorted armature.

You are on the right track, tap it very gently, then try it. All that is doing is shaking the brushes out a little further to touch the armature.

It will almost certainly be worn out brushes.get an Auto sparky to check / replace them. Average charge is $100.00 incl. labour.

Thanks very much for the advice guys! Has anyone bought one of those pirate part starters from Repco or wherever and if so any idea on price! A quick fix bolt in would be good at the moment. Cheers!

try another battery and see if the problem is still there then. if its only doing this when warm

Cheaper to get a reputable Auto Sparky to overhaul, last one I bought new from Repco was for a Nissan pulsar which is similar but cost $380.00 only because customer couldn't wait for me to O/H theirs!

How about ballast resistor! Had a fiddle with it and car started instantly. Got another one from Repco and it smokes! Any advice please, thanks.

Another question (!) how should that ballast be wired! Seems to be black with white tracer wires both going to one end and a thin black wire at the other end going to the + side of the coil. No wiring diagram unfortunately.

That is not logical when you said the car did not crank("has started to refuse to turn engine over when hot") as a ballast resistor will not interfere with the cranking of the engine. It simply allows full battery voltage to the coil under cranking and when you let the key go it reverts back to 6-8 volts. There should be two power wires to the +ve side of the coil or one side of the resistor from memory and one to the -ve side.
Is the resistor got same ohms stamped on it as the old one! Sometimes they smoke cause they are burning the dust off them
