Because you've said "fun to drive" it's going to count out the usual candidates in this category. But what comes to mind is a Mazda Familia SP20 or a Toyota Altezza.

A Mazda 3 2.0 that someone needs quick $$ for , otherwise they will probably be over 10k , one of best to drive in it's class , suggest a manual though as the 4sp auto not efficient enough (would rob too much power) in anything less than the 2.3 sp23 model. Not the quietest car to travel on a chip-seal road in as the sound insulation is cr*p , but you won't fall asleep driving it as in a Corolla.

Bought me a one of those smallish 5 door hatch seats 5 gets about 5L/100kms comfortable as, quiet, corners on rails at stupid speeds in airconditioned comfort great ride smooth as $3,800.
