Buying a Caravan

My parents are looking at buying their first caravan. Is there somewhere you can take them to get a pre purchase inspection similar to what the AA does for cars!

Sorry don't have that answer but be very careful of newly imported English caravans as they can have major issues that are not easily spotted. If you have any caravan repair outfits near you they should be able to offer assistance/advice.

Can someone shed some light as to why caravans have the wheels set up in the middle!

Thanks everyone.I have heard there can be some dodgy uk vans out there thats why they wanted to get it checked over before paying over big money.

You have caravans that are 6 or 7 meters long with the wheels/axles in the middle. Why don't they make them with so they have one set at the front and one at the rear. Surely that would make them more stable when towing and take away the need to wind down stabilisers at each corner when parked up for the night.
You don't see truck trailers set up like that.

You do get some truck trailers like that, mainly transporters and some tippers.

Get any New Zealand made van checked out also. They can be very "dodgy" as well.

Simple answer, tandem caravans with a wheels at either ends would never be able to be towed properly. The only way that set up would work is if the wheels were able to turn with the car's wheels, then you have a logistical nightmare. With the wheels being near the centre of the caravan it makes them easy to tow and maneuver around corners and sharp bends. As far as the parking legs- you still would need them as there sole purpose is not just to stop the van from tipping it's to take pressure of the tyres and stabilise the caravan too.
