should be ok for parts 93 onwards is where merc lovers stopped having parts . there is a guy who has only mercs in his scrap jard but nothing newer then 93as that was about when they used biodegrading wiring looms 93 onwards till some time later.

If its just for a family ,everyday vehicle why do you not save yourself a whole lot of money and stress and buy a holden or a falcon. Tons of parts anywhere in new zealand and cheap and easy to work on and maintain. If its special interest thats different.

tigra, Dec 13, 8:51am
Go on get a merc. I've had mine for just 7 months and love it.

grangies, Dec 13, 9:01am
It will be miles better than most other station wagons from 1987.

Those old Mercs have lasted the test of time and, if you do the math of 1987 vehicles that are still on the road with WOF, then they up there in the top.

For example. How many Holden commodores or Ford Falcons from 1987 do you see on the road these days!. Even though in NZ, Falcon and Commodore were the biggest selling brands back then.

But today in 2102 there are many more 80's Mercs available than Holdens and Aussie Fordsthat are still going good, because their body's have not disintegrated into piles of rusted sheet-metal.

In the 80's NZ had bugger all Mercs , but those we did have are now more common on the NZ roads than most of the other cars that out-sold them hundreds times over . lol.

There are 7 1987 falcons, 19 1987 commodores and 5 1987 mercs on here at the mo. Parts are everywhere for the falcons and commodores, but the merc wreckers are ! One between Taupo and Tokoroa and !. All I can add if its not special interest the aussie brand be cheaper to own and replace when needed.

What a stupid comment. you'd bloody well expect a Benz to last longer than a Falcodore given something comparable in size like a 300E for example would have cost three times as much to buy new, and most examples here wouldn't have been used commercially either, and largely had pampered lives in the hands of the wealthy,, whereas most Aussie sixes had a hard life from new and were largely built to a price.By the mid 90's when MB quality turned to poo, good rustproofing didn't mean much when the car couldn't be driven reliably due to wiring falling to bits and had a manufacturers programmed life of 10 years in line with modern German car construction policy.

morrisman1, Dec 13, 9:41am
that was back when merc made good cars. I'd rather that than a commodore pile of junk

vtecnet, Dec 13, 9:55am
go for the old merc, I got one for $1000 about 8 months ago, done 10,000ks so far, no problems, its just a 190e 2.3, but i suspect it will go for years.
But models made after about 1993 weren't as reliable from what I recall,.

trade4us2, Dec 13, 9:58am
I'm not going to drive very far so I don't care about economy.
Of course I need to get a WOF, so I don't want anything too rusty.
I've done all maintenance including valve grinds on my older cars such as Holden Ford Daimler Jag Chev.
Maybe I should go to PickaPart and see what parts are available for what cars.

The hidden problem (the one that makes the garage rich fixing "other things") is the condenser cap - it must be replaced and a new seal every 50,000 k or so - If you are told you have a fuel pump problem - it's not - it's the distributor.

Having owned a few 90??

hpaul, Dec 13, 9:30pm
That era to early 90's (W124 Series) was the last of the 'bank vault' Mercs. Brilliant cars, so much character and very few faults. You'll love it. The one in your link was particularly cheap.

trade4us2, Dec 13, 10:29pm
I know that now! I should have bought it unseen.
I could probably manage with a hatchback, so I could go Japanese.

Love the video, have to say however the google wearing mechanic is a bit wierd!

sas777, Dec 14, 11:13am
That was just an act of vandalism, really. It shows that the ratings were flagging at that stage so they had Vicky driving over the bumps making vaguely orgasmic noises, aah bit of soft porn, bound to improve the viewing figures.
Truth is, that car could still be on the road today - the insinuation was that it was no good simply due to the age and low price. Age means nothing if it's well looked after and rust free. The price was low because of Britain's insanely expensive (compulsory) insurance. And the mileage was not particularly high either.
What a waste.

mercs are good i have a 1992 190d and get any parts i need from ebay in uk, takes about a week to get here and about 10 pounds for post average, they are a joy to work on, nuts and bolts undo well, online forums are helpful, the only down side is beware who you take your car to, when i brought mine ,i took it to get a wheel alignment in whitianga and the guy who worked on my car keyed my car with scratches and put nazi signs on it, then i took to the garage in tairua, and complain about that and when i pick it up there was acid.paint stripper blotches on it, so i went ,im not take my car to anyone again and brought more tools again, over all im keeping mycar for they drive well
