SCU on TV at mo. ABS brakes.

Just watching this progam and seen the investigator doing a skid testt in his Holden wagon. Now clearly the brakes locked up the front wheels. Don't all the late model Holdens have ABS or can you turn it off or can ya still lock up the front wheels with it on!Just curious.

he proberly removed the relay that controls the ABS

Fair enough then.Easly overidden then.Thanks.

Yes, but don't do it. There have been cases where Insurance has not paid out because ABS has been disabled or the fuse pulled. A Prado I had some years back had terrible ABS - would go clack, clack, clack and hardly stop in a panic situation, Never tested, but am certain it would stop in a much shorter distance on dry seal without ABS. The price of progress!

To true, but ABS also enables you steer as well as brake heavy andmaintain control. Im pretty sure most drivers forget the steering part and just hope to stop.

The bit I don't get is how they seem to assume their modern Holden will leave the same length marks at a given speed as the crash victims 1986 ford laser. Different car, different brakes, different weight, different tyres, different driver etc.

Perhaps they have an allowance in the calcs for this! Anyone know!

Its just a grip test on the surface of the road. Has it got high grip or low grip etc.
Or like most of our roads, some grip, no grip, a bump a hole and grip again.if ya lucky.

With ABScops cant measure your skidso cantprove you were speedingat time of the crash ,

mrfxit, Jan 23, 4:06am
They can measure it fairy close by the amount of damage in direct relation to what was hit & the road type + weather at the time + any booze/drugs or not.

Theres plenty of accident references around to compare data with.

saxman99, Jan 23, 5:12am
Some modern cars have data such as speed stored on ABS/SRS/ECU which can be accessed and used to prosecute after a crash, a bit like an aircraft "black box".

They're not doing that. They're measuring the co-efficient of friction.

mmmmm Yeah Nah.mmmm
End of the day the imbalance shown in the rear brakes due to the piece of wire crimping the rear brake line .
Could- In My Honest opinion have been sufficient to cause one rear wheel to lock prematurely- causing weight transfer and the resultant sideways motion that happened.

But they looked at it as .
the skid marks started at the same place so both rear wheels locked together.

mmmm

In the real world locking the rear brakes on a laden truck!
And the resultant sideways motion.!

mmmmmm

The same brake readings would be obtained from a low tyrepressure on one side- and the weight transfer would be predictable

And it did not show any tyre pressure checking- which with duel rear wheels can also be a factor.
