They are heaps better than they used to be but you would never see me in one , unless I wanted something that cant be purchased in NZ , like a Wish or a Ipsum or some oddball thing like that. Buy NZ new if your budget will let you.

ON A VW NO LESS.Show me someone doing that on a japanese import. I know its possible but on most good cars like nissans its not easy. And i know how to do nissans among others.IT IS NOT THAT EASY.
This thread is titled jap imports so my response was about japanese cars not some pos VW that is possible to import from japan.

Again its a euro car.Generally not as easy on a jap car.

Good point. We were talking about RUC's at work at lunchtime today with our contractors. I asked how many switched or disconnected their odos and out of 14 diesels owner operators in the room, 11 were cheating the system. and only clocking up about 5,000km per annum. Somebody's going to buy these "low mileage" vehicles in the future. I think I would rather take my chances with a Jappa.

There are plenty of Jap import VWs & other European marques - this is just a random demo off youtube. If you look at these gadgets 'odometer correction tools' for sale you'll see they have adapters for all the Jap models, not just Euro ones

Absolutely, at least you are getting something that was intended for NZ market. Its my preference as well.

So are you going to report them!Correct me if I'm wrong but IIRC you are or at least were a diesel HIace owner yourself stevo, did this not make you angry both as an honest diesel owner and as a taxpayer!

Sure but in most cases they dont just plug in and work you have to pull the cluster and modify it or use specialised flash rom flashing equipment (directly to the odo or at the chip itself) for the certain model/brand of flash chip the odo ecu uses.Which is why you cant find any videos on youtube of someone just plugging the thing in as it usually doesnt work that way with japanese cars.
If your so sure it works buy one and ill have a laugh when you post the video showing that it doesnt work that easy.

You know what -this idiototic argument is going to go on for the next fifty years or so. Heck you guys will be saying that the motors in your electric wheelchairs have been clocked. There is system after system put in place to protect the public from dishonest dealers and to wrap the public in cotton wool as far as vehicle condition is concerned. I stand behind my statement that the worst odometer cheats are right here in NZ - Frankly I don't give a flying rats petutie. I -ME MOIdo everything I personally can to buy honest cars in good condition.I then do everything I can to make sure what goes on the road is the best I can make it. MOST dealers do the same thing and as a result by a country mile Jap imports are safer, more honest and more reliable than they have ever been

Agreed.I have to put these numptys right when they are spouting incorrect information though.

Hi franc123. Yes I am a diesel hiace owner, I have owned diesels for many years and I do not disconnect my speedos. No I am not going to report them. Athough I dont agree with what they are doing, I am not a nark. I will leave those sort of tactics to Johnf_

Kabanz , very honourable indeed , however your honest nature does nothing to erase the memories of those who suffered at the hands of your predecessors. Back in the day Jap Imports came across our borders in droves , all wierd and wonderful shapes and the MAJORITY had been wound . Buyers lost thousands through cars that devalued at alarming rates let alone broke down or wore out with only 42,000km on the clock. Broken trust takes more than a generation to repair.
This is the main reason that Jap Imports will always be the poorer cousin to new NZ.

Qualiy cars have never been cheaper in NZ.There is no such thing as a bad Jap car today.Find something you like and buy the bloody thing. If you are tired of it after 20 years, dump it and buy another. NZ has finally caught up with the rest of the world.
