Hilux head gone - how easy to fix?

tigertim20, Feb 16, 11:30pm
young female friend has a 1990 toyota Hilix Surf, 2.4 turbo. apparently it has blown the head.

She has been quoted 3k by a mechanic to repair, which sounded a little on the high side - or is this about right?

Thinking about offering to do it for her if it is likely to save her much. Any idea on the cost of just parts? any particular idiosyncrasies to this model that one needs to be aware of before tearing into it?

well its probably the end of it . i have a 1990 hilux ssr
purchased it at auction years and years ago with head cracked and in the boot when i got it.
So after longer i managed to get a head that did come as form of a whole automatic car for 1 grand
then i cleaned up the engine and as i was to fit the head i noticed woppidoo the rear middle piston was sloppy as hell.
So i remove the rest of the engine and find a busted dualmass clutch flywheel and the piston would have had low compression.
that was the end of this engine but i had the whole engine from the automatic car.
Now comes the next problem the automatic has a flexplate and i need a new flywheel and clutch.
another half a year later after finding the lowest price to get a solid flywheel made was 700$.

I then got told a old hilux ute on a dargaville cumara farm is getting scrapped so i went there with my mesuring tape and eyometer and the old L engine seems to fit so i buy that engine and take it home.
it has a solid mass flywheel but behold the crank bolts from the newer engine has more screws then the old engine a different pattern.
so then i sold the original engine off from this automatic and fixed the gaping rusted hole that had corroded in to the front cover alluminium housing by a mate who welded it shut with a new hose conection for some money .
the old engine fitted in there with minor mods and tricks non need certification as it was just a special pulley i needed for the power steer pump and a few other minor tricks like a sticker on the check engine light on the dash as the old engine has 0 electronics

is it worth that. Yes 2-3k depends who does it. Probably needs new radiator, water pump, coolant, oil, new head( second hand planed & tested), Check injectors etc, all adds up, labour $70 plus/hour. Whats it worth 4k?. sell for parts.

intrade, Feb 16, 11:55pm
i hope you can see that its probably better to scrap it unless you can do all the work your self and even then . is it worth doing as that is just the beginning of your potential problems
its why i have a gutless 60hp 2.2 diesel hilux non turbo move my one.
it is on a farm registration

head will be cracked between valve these heads have shims that need adjusting manually the egr system is what blocks up the intake side of the head , i had my head for years it had a few ports almost fully blocked up with carbon sludge.
A other problem is a design flaw of the head to block cooling gallery if coolant is not replaced every time it is due like every 24 month then it can block the head and cook it silently. the symptoms are ruff running followd by gray smoke out the tailpipe= head is cracked up

if the job is done incorrect it wont be long and the new head is cracked again also. 3500$ is about the real minimum a professional repair will cost just on the head and what ever else needs doing like injectors also need testing and and and . it adds up thick and fast if its done right.
on the other hand if its done right you could get another 200 tausend or more trouble free operation.
Like the toyota Estima enema i once repaired with a new head is still going and that was years ago. i dont recomend purchasing or bothering to repair a enema however.

at least 3k . then the extra pressure from the good head/valves etc will put the old rings under duress. don't get involved in this can of worms.

If you can do it yourself put a 1uzfe in it, plenty of others have done it, plenty of kits available to fit, will cost more than 3k but if it's a tidy truck it should be worth $7 -$10k once it is finished. Loads of effort and not really worth doing unless you can cut out the labour component or really want a v8 4x4.
Personally, I would part it out.

If it's not drivable then rip the head off. Then you will know whether all the naysayers are right or not.
If it's cracked a head or the motor looks poked then probably scaresly worth fixing economically even with free labour.

If it goes and the risk of it being poked (it's been crook for a while) is high, part it out or sell as is.

I don't know where people get this "you'll have to do the injectors". Take the radiator to a specialist to clean and report. Thermostat, belt and perhaps idlers/tensioners, gasket and perhaps a head plane, oil and filter would be nice but probably not essential unless you get a lot of carborundum in the oil wet and drying the block like some recommend.

It's a simple old motor, in a bit of a throw away truck. If you are willing to do the work. have a go.

mechnificent, Feb 17, 1:53am
Next they will be telling you it has to have a new turbo too.

mechnificent, Feb 17, 1:56am
You can throw it away without even checking what is in there, or you can pull the head and make an informed decision.

Tip some of this in. if it works, good. if not scrap it.

k
Or put a bottle of iron tite and if that heals it you then get the radiator unblocked

tigertim20, Feb 17, 3:00am
it has recently had a new radiator fitted as it was over heating. she had another friend fit the radiator when she found it getting very hot.

she said she thinks that it had already cracked the head at that point as it overheats every time its driven - she had hoped it was just a radiator issue, hence replacing it.

3962, Feb 17, 3:04am
How long does it last? Long enough to get rid of it & make it a problem for someone else?
I suppose it's the same as http://www.thermalweldnz.co.nz/

saki, Feb 17, 3:52am
A mate at work has the same problem, quoted about the same but with a (Brand) new head.

andy61, Feb 17, 3:55am
Why didnt your friend get it tested before replacing radiator and hoping? a simple test will confirm a cracked head, radiator shops can test the engine before wasting money on needless replacement parts .

tigertim20, Feb 17, 4:15am
as I understand, she had a friend fit the new radiator. Im not sure what checks were done at this point to diagnose the radiator as the problem

mugenb20b, Feb 17, 4:22am
The cost of parts will be around $1500. You will need new head bolts, thermostat and a radiator rod out. Check viscous fan for operation too, it's often overlooked. If the engine has done close to 400k, don't bother with a new head or you'll blow the bottom end. $3k can buy you a reconditioned 3L long block so that may be worth a look.

intrade, Jun 13, 10:01pm
they get hot because the harmonic balancer splits in 2 and then the waterpump and fan wont be driven and it overheats, So check for a split crank-pulley as first action befor going on new head and god knows what else miss diagnoisng wise.
