I've been looking at cars for my wife ,just a run around ,looking at Mazda 3's and was also thinking maybe kia cerato or Hyundai i30 2007-2010 as they seem to be good value for the money, anything -apart from resale value - to be aware of ?,anyone here owned or driven them, cheers

Driven both, Good reliable honest cars, (Hyundai owns Kia now) Neither are drivers cars, ie steering may be a bit vague, power is adequate rather than impressive. The i30's hold value better than the Kia at this stage because Kia is still proving itself. Owned a Mazda3 (Axela) sp23 for 8 years. Its as reliable but much more of a drivers car. In this segment, Roadholding/Handling is dominated by the Mazda, Ford Focus and VW Golf although in my opinion the Mazda has better reliability, looks and resale. It does have a lot of road noise though. As it a runabout for Mrs Mopar63, any of your choices would be good reliable vehicles that should set her up for a few years
