Op, when I read the comment 'I taught him' I cringed. Don't. The standards now are, thankfully much higher, and we learn bad habits.
Professional lessons needed.

They certainly had a quota.

It was widely published that testers were expected to fail a certain percentage of applicants.

That is absolute rubbish that was never stated !

So much for gossip and rumor :)

Quota? A term commonly used by the disenchanted to explain away receipt of parking tickets, traffic infringements, driver testing failures.

As seen in #30, there are national averages available monthly.

The tests are standardized and a marking schedule is used for the practical testing phase.

Now - if the national average is in the region of 60% pass rate, it makes sense to compare individual testing sites and individual testers against this figure.

Any site or any individual deviating significantly from this average will warrant investigation to find out why.

Same applies to call center response times,
marking averages for school exams, parking enforcement, etc etc.

Your data is by gender. We need the AA to ask the hard questions! The OP's question, and my subsequent one was on pass rates of teenage boys relative to teenage girls.

My son went on to pass second time around. I have still to come across a parent or teenage boy who passed first time while the teenage girls, on the whole seem to be getting through first time

He failed first time round because he failed the same critical error twice. He was taken down an industrial park where a truck was double parked. He over took the truck but didn't indicate. 1st fail. He went 100m down the road and there as another tuck double parked. Overtook and again didn't indicate. Second fail.

Didnt repeat that mistake on the next test!

this
boy needs a lesson or two with an instructor to learn what the tester is looking for.
Its easy enough to train someone to drive but it's best to have a couple of lessons with a licensed instructor so you know what the testers are focusing on .

I've had another look at the stats which are:
Age Total Pass rate
16 1,526 70%
17 1,773 65%
18 1,232 62%

Pass rate is apparently "Pas / Fail '/ Stopped". Which means the stats include those who failed first time around.

Obviously not everyone passed first time around since the result wasn't 100%. But lets say all girls passed and all boys failed first time around and the number of boys and girls were the same then we'd end up with a 50% pass rate.

The pass rate is higher (lets call it 70%) which means the girls don't need to sit second time around so 100% of the boys go into the second test pool. Obviously 100% of this 100 % of boys don't pass - if they did the overall results would be 100%,

We need to add about another 20% pass rate to the already 50% pass rate of the girls to get to the overall 70% pass rate. Math isn't my strong point but I think it is 40% of the 100% of failed boys will pass second time around to get the overall result to 70%.

So this means that 100% of girls pass first time around. 100% of boys fail first time around. 40% of boys pass second time around 60 % of boys fail second time around.

This seems consistent with my anecdotal observations and sounds like a quota based on failing teenage boys on the first round.

A good lurk for testers to guarantee their income by failing a proportion of learner drivers.

Taught my son to drive at 16 he passed first time.
If your a competent driver and see what the testing criteria is you should have no trouble coaching your kids to pass maybe some need professional lessons.

Oh good grief!
You make all those assumptions, and assumptions they must be - and then you say that it agrees with hearsay ?

Fttt. .

They mark against a schedule.

The pass/fail rates of individual testers and sites are compared against the national averages.

So - some big conspiracy huh ?
