The seller made a statement of fact according to the OP--ie it was cam chain.
That statement of fact affected the OP's buying decision.

As if you would believe anything a seller tells you unless its backed with documentation, a quick google would have told otherwise. Some will tell you whatever it takes to make a sale, its more likely they knew a belt change was going to be needed shortly.

Couldn't agree more, that's why you need to be verifying what they say, in the form of either prior research on a cars specification if whether its got a cambelt or not is very important to you, or in the case of servicing and repairs getting your friendly pre purchase checker to go through receipts and/or look for evidence the works been done. This of course can include a belt inspection if its feasible to do so.
