Series 1 jaguar boot latch problem

purple666, Jun 24, 1:24am
The knob turns and springs back but it doesn't operate the latch. Can't go through the back seat as LPG tank is right in the way. Really need it to open as the only gauge for the LPG is on the tank in the boot. I figure we will have to cut a wee hole to get at the workings but have no idea where. Anyone know exactly how these work and any ideas on where to make the hole?
Cheers

kick a hole through the rusted quarter panel and open from the inside?

Tried the obvious, maybe the wrong search string.
XJ6 first reg NZ 1969 but it is a 1968 model, never paid any attention to that part of the car as it never gave any problems, well until yesterday.

Try pushing down hard on the lid and also tapping it as you operate the button.

The knob has obviously become detatched from the latch, the only resistance is from the return spring in said knob. The knob turns, not a push in.

what about removing a tail light and go thru that hole does that lead in the boot?

Hmmm hadn't thought of that, will make some measurements tomorrow.

Some xj6's have a hole behind the number plate that lets you trip the boot latch, not sure if series I has though, will have a rubber bung in it.
