98 Mazda Capella wagon. Timing belt or chain?

model gf-gw8w. 1.8l. I think the engine model is FP-DE. If belt, roughly how much to replace it, and the other associated bits. TIA

Sorry. Engine is FP-4822

So after an hour of google not being my friend much at all, it looks like it is a belt.

mazda about 5 times the money what every other car costs.
i replaced a faulty cam belt tensioner was over 200$ for that part alone. the cambelt was not due and we where going to change that also. but i fitted the old one again as the belt was another 200$ from mazda
its not google mazda are a nightmare no information is n the net for anything information parts you name it

Zoopa, it does have a timing belt and mechanical tensioner, so shouldn't be overly expensive to replace.

Even if you did pump and coolant (recommended if not done for a while) it would be around 700 at the outside. Its not a difficult or expensive.job on those.

Wait till you see what VWs cost!

Besides, if you shop around, you'll find Mazda parts are reasonably priced, I've never paid $200 for a belt or a tensioner.
