It was a running change in about 1986 which was only about two years after the Surf model was first created. There's bugger all of them in NZ.

It was an option from about 1984. You could get either live or IFS. All the "Surf/Prado branded from about 1989 had IFS front & coil rear http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_4Runner

its not what box it has its what engine is bolted to the gearbox. usually L engine was used till mid 90s to the same bell-housing . otherwise explain your question more correct the difference is in the differential ratios i would say.
