Have look at Toyota mark V. Based on Lexus IS running gear but marketed differently in Japan. 2.5 v6 and 6 speed auto so reasonable economy and enough guts for bit of towing. Great value. Rear wheel drive.

My 1976 van weighs about 1800kg so you don't want anything to light.

monaro17, Dec 21, 7:49am
What brand and length caravan is that?

casper35, Dec 21, 9:13am
zephyr 380 13ft. ownership papers say 1990kg.

monaro17, Dec 21, 7:07pm
don't go by the ownership papers they are often misleading. For example my old caravan only weighed 840kg but papers said it was 1340kg.

I can quite confidently say your caravan would weigh no more than 1200kg. This is a fact- 1000000% your caravan does not weigh anywhere near 1800kg.

Any sedan or wagon with approx 2.5 litre will do nicely. Toyota mark V, v6 Camry aurion, Honda Accord euro 2.4. Passat v6.

Well you will not get a more economical car than a 6 speed coon unless you go diesel or lpg, Both ford and holden have done lpg versions of aussie sixes. otherwise mondeo would be the best bet diesel or petrol.

I'd say there are a few cars around that offer better economy than a falcon.

ggoodwin, Dec 22, 9:56am
Thanks everyone, lots of suggestions there. The Falcon is 'had it' because it's done 300 000K and needs about $1500 of work done to it to get a warrant. It's money that we'd like to put into a newer car as it's just going to get more and more expensive to fix over the next few years I imagine. And it's time for a change.

Subaru Outback is sounding good - what are they like for fuel economy (around town)? I also hear the are expensive to repair. Is that true?

Good cars but not known for economy. Partly your lugging 4wd gear around and its in 4 wd always. Then the older 4 cylinder ones only have 4 speed auto and aren't particularly powerful so work hard.

What about a 380, they are great cars and cheap. I don't think you will get something that is economical around town, but has good grunt for towing, unless maybe a diesel, but then you have RUC.

Jeep Cherokee was the best tow wagon I've had, prob pick one up for 5k, just get the cooling system checked and it won't miss a beat , good for boat towing too.

They guzzle gas around town, and yes very expensive to repair/maintain.Cousin had a cambelt done last month on his 3.0 Outback. $1126.
